Box Score GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Needing to win two games against the Georgia Southern Eagles on Saturday to advance to Sunday's title game, the Elon Phoenix accomplished the first part of the task by claiming an 11-4 win in the 2013 Southern Conference Tournament.
The second batter of the game,
Alex Swim lined a single into center field to become Elon's all-time hits leader. The hit was the 285th of the senior's career.
With the win, Elon picked up its 30th victory of the season - the 14th consecutive 30+ win season for the program.
The victory went to
Ryan Pennell (2-2) who allowed just one hit in five innings out of the bullpen. Pennell walked one and struck out four.
The Eagles (27-31) started the last of the first with back-to-back singles from Scooter Williams and Ben Morgan to put runners on the corners. A one-out single from T.D. Davis got Georgia Southern on the board as Williams scored. On the play, Morgan was gunned out at third. After GSU loaded the bases with two singles, Tyler Avera took a 3-2 pitch for ball four to force in a second run.
Elon (30-28) got one back in the top of the second.
Antonio Alvarez began the inning with a double down the left field line and later scored on
Chris Bresnahan's two-out single to right-center.
Entering the sixth, Elon trailed 4-1 before getting a rally started. The Phoenix began its half of the sixth with a
Sebastian Gomez single. A one-out single from Alvarez put runners on the corners for
Danny Lynch. On Lynch's swinging bunt single, Gomez just avoided the tag of the Eagle catcher as he charged home with Elon's second run of the game. The maroon and gold made it a 4-3 game when Alvarez scored on a
Chris King single. Once a Bresnahan single loaded the bases,
Quinn Bower bounced one up the middle that was fielded by the shortstop, but the second baseman dropped the toss to the bag and all runners were safe, including Lynch who scored to tie it up at four. Swim then gave the Phoenix its first lead by doubling off the wall in left-center. Elon's lead reached 7-4 when Gomez lifted a sacrifice fly to left.
Elon extended its lead to 9-4 in the seventh when Lynch doubled home both
Casey Jones and Alvarez with a shot to left-center. Pinch-hitter
Niko Fraser was hit by a pitch to put two on with nobody out when Bresnahan lined a single to center to load the bags. Bower picked up the RBI by lifting a sacrifice fly to left that drove in Lynch to make it a 10-4 game.
Swim finished the game 3-for-4 with two RBI, while Bresnahan went 3-for-4 with a run and RBI for the Phoenix.
The loss went to Josh Stevenson (1-5) who was charged with five runs on nine hits in 5.1 innings.
The two teams will play again on Saturday to determine who will face The Citadel in Sunday's championship game.
