Elon vs. the ACC
Over the course of its 90+ football seasons, the maroon and gold has faced off with six current members of the Atlantic Coast Conference. Elon has matched up against Clemson (0-1), Duke (0-7-1), Miami (1-2), North Carolina (0-1), North Carolina State (0-4) and Wake Forest (0-9-1). Only three of those contests (Duke, North Carolina and Wake Forest) have come since Elon made the move to NCAA Division I play for the 1999 season.

For Starters
Playing its 92nd season of football in 2012, the Elon program has compiled a mark of 40-50-1 in its previous 91 season-openers. Since moving to NCAA Division I play for the 1999 campaign, the maroon and gold has posted a 4-10 record in games to start the season.

New Faces
The Phoenix coaching staff underwent a few changes following the 2012 season.  New defensive coordinator Brad Sherrod joins the Phoenix staff after three seasons as the assistant head coach and linebackers coach at the University of Delaware. Elon also added a new strength coach in Ted Perlak and a new director of operations in Jonathan Small.

Elon vs. FBS Opponents
Elon's August 31 game at Georgia Tech marks the sixth time that Elon has taken on a Football Bowl Subdivision opponent. The first was a 28-13 loss at South Florida to open the 2007 season – a year in which USF would peak at #2 in the FBS polls. In 2009, Elon dropped a 35-7 decision at Wake Forest before falling 41-27 at Duke in 2010. In the past two seasons, the Phoenix has faced Vanderbilt (L, 45-14 in 2011) and North Carolina (L, 56-0 in 2012).

Quinn to Make 1st Start
Junior quarterback Mike Quinn is set to make his first career start under center when the Phoenix takes on Georgia Tech. The native of Wayne, N.J., has appeared in 12 career games, completing 24 of his 35 passes (68.6%) for 147 yards and two touchdowns. Quinn will be just the third quarterback to start a game for Elon in the past seven seasons.

Watch This
Junior wide receiver Kierre Brown was selected to the watch list for the CFPA Wide Receiver Award. Last season, Brown was second on the team with 45 receptions, 642 receiving yards and for receiving touchdowns.

Preseason Prognostications
Four Elon players were selected to the preseason All-Southern Conference Team in 2013. Junior linebacker Jonathan Spain was a first-team pick, while senior offensive lineman Clay Johnson, junior wide receiver Kierre Brown and senior defensive back Chandler Wrightenberry were all second-team honorees.  As a team, the Phoenix was picked to finish eighth in the SoCon by both the coaches and media.

Oh Captain, My Captain
Selected as team captains for 2013 were senior defensive linemen Jordan Jones and Tony Thompson and senior offensive lineman Clay Johnson. The Phoenix also selects one other captain for each game week.

at Georgia Tech – Akeem Langham
