ELON, N.C. – The Elon University men's tennis team, ranked No. 49 in the country, stayed unbeaten in Southern Conference play with a 6-1 victory today, April 2, at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center against UNC Greensboro.
"I played well and I think the team played well today," said sophomore
Robert Lindgren. "My opponent was tough. He came out good and ready but I thought as a team we came out well and were ready to play all around. We had the loss from last year in the back of our heads a little bit so we wanted to stay in this match and really put on a good showing."
The win is the first victory for the Phoenix since the 2009 season when Elon topped the Spartans 6-1. Since, UNC Greensboro had won four in a row over the Phoenix.
Lindgren was a key piece in Elon's victory, as the sophomore earned a 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) victory on court No. 2 over Randy Phillips to clinch the match for the Phoenix.
Brian Kowalski was the first player off the court in singles for Elon with a 6-2, 6-1 victory on court No. 4 against Gaston Murray. He was followed by
Stefan Fortmann with a 6-4, 6-1 win on court No. 2 before Lindgren clinched the victory.
Jordan Kaufman made it 5-0 in Elon's favor shortly after Lindgren's win, but the Spartans avoided the shutout with Cameron Smith coming out on top against
Ismael Sanchez Delfin with a 7-6 (8-6) 6-1 win on court No. 6.
Cameron Silverman, the No. 36 player in the country, finished the afternoon with a 6-3, 6-7, 1-0 (10-4) win in a super tiebreaker on court No. 1 over Ahmet Sarioglu.
Elon swept the doubles point with an 8-6 win from Silverman and Kaufman on court No. 1, an 8-3 victory from Kowalski and Lindgren on court No. 2 and an 8-5 win on court No. 3 from Fortmann and
Juan Madrid.
The Phoenix will hit the road this weekend for the last time of the 2014 regular season, as Elon will take on Furman in Greenville, S.C. on Saturday, April 5, before going to Spartanburg, S.C. to take on Wofford. Both matches are scheduled for 1 p.m.
