Seven Innings With Emily Cameron

With the start of the 2015 season for the Elon University softball team less than a month away, get a chance to learn more about each member of the team with a preseason series called "Seven Innings" as every student-athlete answers seven questions that makes them unique.

As the first pitch to the Phoenix's opening game versus USC Upstate is only 22 short days away, today's installment features Emily Cameron, a junior utility player from Kennesaw, Ga. One of the more athletic players on the squad, Cameron has played in 90 career games during her two season, making 88 starts during that span. She holds a career .282 batting average and has played nearly every infield position but third and patrolled left field for most of last season. Cameron began her sophomore campaign with a bang last year, earning Southern Conference Player of the Week honors after the opening weekend and was the SoCon's Player of the Month for February after hitting .390 with six home runs and 16 RBI.
1. What is your pregame routine before or during the game?
"I don't have one because I would get caught up in things being a certain way and if they weren't, it could have an effect on me mentally."

2. Who has been the biggest influence on your life and why?
"My parents have had the biggest influence in my life. They have taught me so many life lessons and loved me unconditionally that I'll never be able to show them how much they are appreciated."

3. What has been your favorite Elon softball memory so far?
"I feel like it will always be my freshman year when we beat Georgia in their home opener. I hit my first homerun that game and the support from my team and the fans was unbelievable; that memory will never fade. I'm excited to play them again this year."

4. You're going into this season with a new look then in years past with shorter hair. How long did it take to get used to the new look?
"I'm still getting used to it. Honestly, the hardest part is trying to figure out how to prevent helmet hair. Coach (Tyler) Engle told me that eventually I'll learn not to care… I'm still waiting on that moment."

5. You have also shown to be a talented musician. What instruments can you play and which is your favorite? Also, have you had any requests from teammates to play certain songs?

"Growing up, I've played saxophone, clarinet and the flute/piccolo. Recently, I've taught myself a few songs on piano and guitar. My favorite is guitar, I love to play it in my free time. Vocalist Caitlin O'Shea has requested a couple different songs, so we plan to release our newest track in the near future."

6. If you could play another sport at Elon besides softball what would it be and why?
"I would play basketball - I miss it. I loved basketball in high school and getting in the gym just to shoot around was something to take my mind off of things."

7. Any nicknames, especially given to you by other members of the team?
"There are two names that I respond to on this team - Cam and ginger. Very rarely do I get called by my first name Emily."
