ELON, N.C. – As a global experience to the Dominican Republic for the Elon Phoenix baseball team comes to a close, here is a look at some of the squad's most recent activities.
On Thanksgiving day, the Phoenix began the day with a 6-0 victory over the Baltimore Orioles' academy team in Boca Chica. Kellan Elsbury,
Nick Beaulac,
Dimitri Lettas and Derek Pike combined for the shutout. Jamal Clarke led the maroon and gold at the plate, recording three hits and scoring three runs.
The Orioles' academy team, like most of the Dominican academies, are made up of mostly Dominican players, but feature some players from Venezuela, Mexico and Colombia.
After spending time working on a reflective writing assignment for the Globalization in Contemporary Sport class, the team had its "Thanksgiving dinner" at an open-air Greek restaurant.
Part of Friday was spent touring a cigar factory.
The team has also taken a tour of Santo Domingo and ran in to Major League Baseball Hall of Fame pitcher Pedro Martinez at a winter league game.
