ELON, N.C. – The Elon women's basketball team is embarking on the trip of a lifetime when the Phoenix heads to Italy from Aug. 14 – 24 to play internationally and get an incredible overseas learning experience.
As part of the Elon Commitment to diversity and global engagement for its students, the team will travel to Milan, Lake Como, San Marino, Pesaro, Florence, Pisa and Rome during the 11-day trip as the student-athletes will also complete their learning requirement. Joyce Davis, a Professor of Exercise Science at Elon, will lead the class 'Globalization of Contemporary Sport' that will study the effects of globalization on sport, research points of interest to be visited and explore Italy's diverse geography, history, society and culture.
The team will also play games against Italian club teams over the course of the trip to gain international playing experience and have a chance to interact with Italian players.
NCAA regulations allow athletics teams to make one foreign trip every four years. This trip will mark the second time Elon's women's basketball program has traveled abroad. The team traveled to France, Netherlands and Belgium in August 2011.
Beginning on Aug. 12, a player will share a daily update from Italy while another player takes over the women's basketball Twitter and Instagram accounts, as well as the Elon Phoenix Snapchat account, each day.
