Ninth-Ranked ECU Hands Elon Defeat

GREENVILLE, N.C. – Playing its fourth game against a top-12 opponent, the Elon University baseball team came out on the wrong side of a 7-2 score against the ninth-rated East Carolina Pirates on Wednesday.

For Elon (3-6), Joe Satterfield was 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and one RBI. Kory Shumate was 2-for-3.

Travis Watkins led East Carolina (5-3) with a 3-for-4 day at the plate. Turner Brown drove in two with a 2-for-4 game.

Jordan Barrett (1-1) took the loss after allowing five runs on seven hits in 3.2 innings.

The win went to Chris Holba (2-0) who struck out nine and gave up two runs on seven hits in 7.0 innings.

How It Happened: Elon jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning as Zach Evers and Satterfield began the game with back-to-back doubles to score a run. A Ryne Ogren single put runners on the corners and Kyle Jackson lifted a sacrifice fly to right to give the Phoenix the 2-0 advantage.

The Pirates got on the board in the last of the third. T.J. Riles and Charlie Yorgen both singled and moved up on a sacrifice bunt. An errant pickoff throw to third by the Phoenix catcher allowed Riles to score and Yorgen to move to third. With runners on the corners after a walk, a sacrifice fly to center knotted the game at two.

ECU would move in front in the fourth, as Spencer Brickhouse scored the go-ahead run on a Riles sacrifice bunt. The Pirate lead stretech to 5-2 when Yorgen doubled home Tyler Edwards with two outs and then scored on Brown's single up the middle.

Single runs in the fifth and eighth capped the Pirates scoring efforts.

Notes: Elon snapped a streak of 23 consecutive scoreless innings when it scored twice in the first inning... Four of Elon's eight hits were doubles.

On Deck: Elon will begin a stretch of playing 14 of its next 15 games at Latham Park when the Phoenix hosts the UMass Minutemen for a three-game series this weekend. Friday's game one in scheduled for a 4 p.m. first pitch.
