ELON, N.C. – The Elon University softball team saw four members of its program receive first team honors on the 2017 North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association (NCCSIA) University Division All-State Softball Teams on Thursday, June 15.
Carey Million manned the NCCSIA first team spot at catcher while
Kiandra Mitchum was one of the two pitchers that received first team All-State laurels.
Alaina Hall and
Kara Shutt rounded out the Phoenix's selections in the outfield as Elon tied UNCW with the most first team honorees with four.
An All-Colonial Athletic Association second team selection at catcher, Million played in 52 games for the Phoenix, making 51 starts. The Roebling, N.J., native had a breakout season during her senior campaign, batting a career-high .329 and pacing the squad in several offensive categories including homers (seven), slugging percentage (.546), stolen bases (eight) and set the program's single-season school record with 48 RBI. She later received second team Mid-Atlantic All-Region accolades from the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA).
Mitchum became Elon's first first team all-conference pitcher with her All-CAA selection in 2017. The Mechanicsville, Va., native carried the Phoenix in the circle this season, posting 18 wins with a 2.18 ERA while leading the league with 211.2 innings pitched. She also posted a career-best 180 strikeouts, which is the second-highest single-season total in school history. Mitchum also finished in the top-five of the league in wins, ERA, batting average (.227), saves (three) and strikeouts.
Shutt was recognized with her second straight first team All-CAA selection in the outfield. The Greensboro, N.C., native started all 53 games this season and was second on the team with a .333 average, 54 hits and her three home runs. She also was tied for the team-lead with 19 multi-hit games and led the Phoenix with a .375 average and 11 runs scored during CAA play.
Hall picked up her second All-CAA recognition in her impressive collegiate career. The Suwanee, Ga., native led the Phoenix with a .373 overall average and was in the top-five of the CAA in total hits with 62. She moved to second all-time in school history in career hits this season and tied the team-lead with 19 multi-hit games. She was also tied for second on the team with 22 RBI.
Nominations were submitted by North Carolina sports information professionals and voted on by NCCSIA members.
Founded in 2002, the North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association (NCCSIA) is comprised of sports information professionals from NCAA Division I, II, III, NAIA and independent institutions from the state of North Carolina. The purpose of the organization is to promote collegiate athletics at all schools. Membership is open to anyone affiliated with a college, university or conference located in North Carolina, and whose area of responsibility lies within sports information.
NCCSIA selects all-state teams in the University (Division I) and College (Division II, III, NAIA) divisions for men's and women's basketball, men's and women's soccer, volleyball, softball and baseball.
