Michael Leonard announced Monday, June 19, the addition of Camilo Ponce of Quito, Ecuador, to the team's 2017 recruiting class.
"We are excited about the addition of Camilo Ponce to our program this upcoming fall," Leonard said. "With his junior experience, he should have an immediate impact on our team. Ponce comes to Elon with a University Tennis Ranking (UTR) of 13.2 after pacing his age group as the top-ranked player in Ecuador throughout most of his junior career. Earlier this year, Ponce earned a wild card into qualifying for the Ecuador Open in his hometown of Quito, where he fell to Agustin Velotti, who went on to win his way into the main draw of the tournament.
Throughout his career, Ponce climbed as high as No. 2 in the Confederacion Sudamericana de Tennis (COSAT) rankings in January 2014 and ranked as high as No. 276 in the ITF rankings. Over the course of the last three years, Ponce has reached seven ITF finals, including multiple events playing both singles and doubles.
Ponce teams up with
Kyle Frankel as Elon's incoming freshmen for the 2017-18 season. Frankel comes to Elon from Oranjestad, Aruba, but attended high school at Montverde Academy in Florida. Both are set to join the Phoenix ahead of the start of the 2017 fall campaign this August.
