Elon Women’s Basketball Prevails in Overtime Thriller Against Appalachian State

Elon, N.C.- After being down by as much as 21, the Elon University women's basketball team fought back to win against Appalachian State in overtime (67-66) on Wednesday night.
 
Jaylin Powell dominated for the Phoenix, leading the team in scoring with 19 points. The other double-digit scorer for Elon was Brie Perpignan, who shot 6-7 from the field.
 
On defense, Jada Graves tallied a game-best four steals, while Perpignan followed with three.  
 
Pre Stanley was the top scorer for App State. The guard finished with 20 points, shooting 8-15 from the field and 2-3 from beyond the arc.
  
HIGHLIGHTS
 
Appalachian State held on to the momentum for the entire first half. The team took their largest lead at the 7:35 mark in the second quarter (21).
 
Elon slowly made their comeback in the third quarter, outscoring the Mountaineers 19-15 and cutting the App State lead to 13 (54-41).
 
The fourth quarter was the turning point for the Phoenix. Elon held the Mountaineers scoreless while going on an 11-0 run to put the Phoenix within two points of App State (54-52, 3:39). Powell scored nine of the points, while Perpignan had the remaining two.
 
After a Mountaineer jumper, Elon closed out regulation with a pair of jumpers from Perpignan and Liles to tie the score at 56 and send the game into overtime.  
 
App State did not go down easy as the Mountaineers scored five quick points. Micaela Ryan, however, answered back with a three ball to keep the Phoenix within striking distance (61-59) with 2:34 remaining.
 
In the final minute of play, the score was 65-64 after a layup by Ariana Nance. App State's Bayley Plummer then took a trip to the charity stripe, where she went 1-1 to give them a two-point advantage (66-64, 0:26).
 
With just under 20 seconds to go, Perpignan kicked the ball out to Powell, who drove into the lane and made a layup while drawing a foul. She made her free throw attempt to give the Phoenix their first lead of the game with 15 seconds remaining. Elon held App State scoreless the rest of the way and took the win.      
 
NOTES
-Tonight's win is head coach Charlotte Smith's 150th career win.
-The Phoenix have now gone 2-0 to start the season in two of the last three seasons. The last came in the 2017-18 campaign when Elon won five straight matchups to open the season.  
-This is the second game in a row that the Phoenix held a team to just two points in a quarter. Elon did it in the second and third quarters of its game against Western Carolina.
-The victory is the first overtime win since Dec. 12, 2018 when the Phoenix defeated Davidson 73-72.
-Elon has won four of the last six meetings with the Mountaineers.
-The matchup is the first overtime game in series history.
 
UP NEXT
Elon will next travel to Poughkeepsie, N.Y. to take on Marist in their first road game of the season. The game is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 17.
