MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.- Elon University women's basketball outscored Newberry College 23-6 in the final 10 minutes of competition to defeat the Wolves 73-53 on Tuesday, Dec. 17.
Three Elon players scored in the double digits: Ariel Colón (14),
Brie Perpignan (13), and
Maya Johnson (10). Colón also recorded a career-high in steals (5) in addition tying her personal best in field goals (6).
Newberry's Keli Romas totaled a team-high 19 points, shooting 4-6 from the field and 3-4 from beyond the arc.
HIGHLIGHTS
With 34 seconds left on the clock in the third quarter and the Phoenix leading by three (50-47),
Micaela Ryan hit her second three pointer of the game to ignite a 13-3 run to give Elon its first double-digit lead of the night (60-50). Perpignan led the run with a field goal and a pair of free throws, while Colón and
Jaylin Powell chipped in a pair of field goals. Johnson also added two free throws.
Romas scored the final two Newberry points immediately after the run to cut the Phoenix lead to eight (60-52). From then on, Elon held the Wolves to one point while tacking on thirteen more to their score in the final 6:03 of regulation to get the win.
In the first half, the maximum lead the Phoenix had was three. The score was tied six times in addition to there being five lead changes.
NOTES
-Elon's records now stands at 4-5.
-The Phoenix recorded new season highs in points (73), field goal percentage (.435), free throw percentage (.813), and offensive rebounds (15) in a single game. Elon also tied its season-low in turnovers (11).
-Newberry had the lead for approximately 4.5 minutes of the game. Most of that time came at the beginning of the game when the Wolves opened the contest with a 4-0 run.
-The Phoenix outscored the Wolves in the paint 34-20.
-After tonight's game, Perpignan and Colón lead the team in points per game with 10.1 and 10.0, respectively.
