Phoenix Falls to IUPUI on Day Two of Lady Rebel Round-Up

LAS VEGAS, NEV.- The Elon University women's basketball team outscored IUPUI 22-7 to erase a 15-point deficit in the third quarter of their matchup against IUPUI on Sunday, Dec. 1. However, the game did not end in their favor as the Jaguars won 59-53 to take the Lady Rebel Round-Up championship title.
 
For the second game in a row, Ariel Colón led the Phoenix offense. The guard totaled 16 points and seven rebounds, shooting 6-7 from of the field and 1-1 from beyond the arc. Jaylin Powell was just two points behind her (14) while also grabbing seven boards.
 
On defense, Jada Graves finished with a game-best and season-high five steals. She has now notched at least two steals in four of the last seven games.      
 
IUPUI's Holly Hoopingarner recorded team highs in points (19), assists (4), and steals (3).

THE RUNDOWN
After ending the first half behind 36-21, the Phoenix started the third quarter with a 12-0 run to cut the Jaguar lead to three (36-33). Powell, who started and finished the run with a pair of layups, scored eight of the 12 points. The two teams traded a pair of field goals, but a four-point play from Colón gave the Phoenix its first lead of the game (40-41) with 1:50 left in the third. Hoopingarner made a shot from deep 24 seconds later, which was followed by a layup from Graves to tie the game at 43 at the quarter's close.  
 
Elon and IUPUI went back-and-forth at the start of the fourth quarter, with the lead changing five times over the first five minutes of play. At the 4:22 mark, IUPUI's Katelyn O'Reilly hit a three ball that ignited a 9-0 run for the Jaguars to give them a seven-point advantage (54-47). The Phoenix made last-minute attempts to regain the lead as time ran out, but IUPUI came out on top with the win.
 
The Jaguars got their early momentum when they opened the game with a 6-0 run. After gradually growing their lead by the 3:48 mark in the second quarter, IUPUI went on a 7-0 run to end the first half with a 15-point advantage.
    
NOTES 
-Elon now holds a 3-4 record on the season.
-The Phoenix outrebounded the Jaguars 43-33.
-32 of Elon's points came in the paint.
-The overall series between the two teams stands at 1-2 in favor of the Jaguars.

UP NEXT
The Phoenix will be off for two weeks before their next contest. Elon will travel to Raleigh to take on NC State on Sunday, Dec. 15. Tipoff is scheduled for noon.
