ELON, N.C. –Â
George Kirby threw a one-hit shutout in Game One of a doubleheader on Sunday, March 10 at Latham Park.Â
A junior out of Rye, N.Y., the right-hander retired 18 consecutive batters after giving up the one hit. He faced two more batters than the minimum and tallied 11 strikeouts on the day. Kirby improves to 3-0 on the year with the decision.
Five Elon batters finished 1-for-3 in the game, including
Anthony Galason doubling and
Tyler Cranston scoring the winning run.
Cam Devanney finished 0-2 with an RBI as his sacrifice fly allowed Cranston to tag up.
Knotted at 5-5 through 15 innings in Game Two, Bryant brought in the decisive run to split the day. Elon used nine different pitchers in the contest, with the bullpen blanking the visitors in seven consecutive innings.
Joe Sprake (0-1) took the loss after giving up one run on a hit and a walk in 0.1 innings of relief. Starter
Mason Daniels went 4.2 innings and allowed four runs on six hits and three walks for the no decision. He struck out three of the 20 batters he faced.
Ty Adcock allowed three hits, but did not walk anyone and totaled five punch outs in 3.0 complete innings of work.
At the plate,
Joe Satterfield hit 3-for-6 and drove in a run.
Garrett Stonehouse batted 2-for-7 with a double, two runs, an RBI, and a base on balls. Devanney finished 2-for-6 with two RBIs and a walk, and
Tyler Stanley also posted a multi-hit effort as the junior went 2-for-6, walked, and touched home twice.
How It Happened (Game 1): After two-and-a-half innings of scoreless ball, the Phoenix (9-6) got going in the bottom half of the third. Cranston singled up the middle to lead off and moved up on a Stanley sacrifice bunt. Stonehouse then faced a full count, drawing a walk as the fourth ball got past the Bulldog (6-6) catcher. The passed ball allowed Cranston to take third as Elon had runners on the corners for Devanney. The redshirt-junior shortstop flew out to right, but it was deep enough for Cranston to sprint the final 90 feet.
The half inning was the only blemish for Bryant starter Steve Theetge (1-1). The senior frustrated Elon's bats as he also tallied 11 strikeouts. Through 8.0 innings, Theetge was tagged for the one run on five hits and three walks.
How It Happened (Game 2): The maroon and gold built an early 3-0 advantage with a run in the second and two more in the third. Adcock singled to left and took second on a Galason ground out. A
Matt Oldham hit through the right side of the defense plated Adcock to get the Phoenix started. In its next go-around, Elon put a runner in scoring position as Stanley singled to right and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Stonehouse then doubled down the left-field line and Devanney singled to right for some insurance.
The Bulldogs responded with a run in the fourth as a walk, singled, and another walk loaded the bases. Elon's defense was able to turn a 4-6-3 double play, but a run came in on the play. The Black and Gold then wrestled away the lead with three more runs in the fifth. With two away and a runner on first, Bryant's Ryan Ward tripled down the right-field line. James Ciliento followed with a two-run home run to center field to give the away team the 4-3 advantage.
After the Bulldogs hit a one-out double in the top half of the eighth to make it a 5-3 game, the Phoenix posted a two-run answer in the bottom half of the frame. Stanley won a 10-pitch battle to earn the free trip to first and went to third on a Stonehouse single down the left-field line. A Devanney grounder up the middle took a favorable bounce over the second baseman and Satterfield found a hole in the left side of the defense to knot the game at 5-5.
Bryant was able to get a runner on second in the top of the 11th, but with two outs Adcock fooled the batter for the final out. Elon got the potential winning run to third base in the bottom half of the inning, but was unable to bring it in. With two away, Adcock took second and third on a pair of wild pitches, but the Bulldog reliever got out of the jam with a strikeout.
The visitors finally connected in the top of the 16th. After a leadoff walk and a stolen base, Bryant's Brian Nicolas singled to right.
Mike Borucki couldn't field Adcock's throw to the plate, however, and the runner came across. Looking to keep the game going, Elon got some life as an
Adam Spurlin hit dropped in shallow right field. The Bulldog second baseman couldn't field the hit cleanly, and Spurlin proceeded to take second. The Ty Ty, Ga. native would stay there, though, as reliever Will Treuel fanned a pair of Elon batters to secure the save.
Notes: The shutout marked a career first for Kirby...Kirby recorded double-digit strikeouts for the third time in four outings. His 11 Ks matched his season high...Through four appearances, Kirby has issued only one walk against the 99 batters he's faced. He is now up to 38 strikeouts on the year and his outing Sunday lowered his ERA to 1.71...Several Elon batters extended their on-base streaks: Galason has reached safely in 13 straight games, Satterfield in 10, and Stanley eight...Today marked the second time this season a game has gone to extras...Game Two marked Elon's longest game since an 18-inning affair at Samford on April 1, 2012. After play was suspended in the top of the seventh on March 31, a two-out Quinn Bower single to center brought in Eric Serra from second. Bower moved to third on the throw home and scored on a
Niko Fraser hit for the final tally.
On Deck: Elon begins a four-game road swing Tuesday, March 12 with a 4 p.m. game at UNCG.
