ELON, N.C. – Elon University women's lacrosse dropped a 20-2 decision to the third-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels on Tuesday, March 12, at Rudd Field.

THE RUNDOWN
Elon (2-6, 0-0 CAA) opened the night winning the opening draw control and
Mae McGlynn's opening shot was stopped by Taylor Moreno. With the Phoenix drawing a turnover on North Carolina's (6-1, 1-0 ACC) first possession,
Quinn Daly got a shot off on the ensuing possession but Moreno stepped in for her second early save.

From there,
Paulina DiFatta stopped UNC's first shot of the day and Elon had another chance with a free position attempt for
Meri Curtin, but Moreno again made the save and Katie Hoeg converted the opening goal of the game just 18 seconds later to put the Tar Heels up 1-0.

After the opening goal, UNC scored three more times in a span of two minutes before
Cami Lynch put Elon on the board with 21:28 left in the opening half. The Elon goal didn't stop UNC, though, with the Tar Heels going on an 8-0 run before
Mae McGlynn scored her team-best 22nd goal of the year with 3:41 left in the half.

With the Tar Heels leading 12-2 at halftime, they continued the strong play with eight more goals in the second half on the way to the win.

Campbell Armstrong each picked up two draw controls apiece for the Phoenix with six players picking up one ground ball. In goal,
Paige Brown made a season-high six saves.

 North Carolina was led by three goals from Hoeg and Jamie Ortega with five other players scoring twice apiece. Hoeg also had two assists for a team-high five points. Ally Mastroianni picked up six draw controls with Ida Farinholt grabbing three ground balls.

UP NEXT
Elon will be back in action next Wednesday, March 20, for a road contest against Virginia Tech. Set for a 4:30 p.m. start, the game will air on ACC Network Extra. Elon's last visit to Blacksburg, Va., in 2017 resulted in an overtime victory for the Phoenix.
