Women’s Lacrosse Doubled Up by No. 21 Virginia Tech, 16-8

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Elon University women's lacrosse dropped a road contest Wednesday, March 20, to No. 21 Virginia Tech at Thompson Field by the final score of 16-8.
 
THE RUNDOWN
Gillian Curran and Mae McGlynn got Elon (2-7) on the board in the opening three minutes to build an early 2-0 lead, but the Hokies (7-4, 0-1 ACC) answered with three goals in a row over a six-minute span to jump on top at 3-2 with 20:01 left in the first half.
 
Following a 4-0 Hokie run to go up 7-3, Cate Mackel tallied to start a brief two-goal run that brought the Phoenix back within two with Kaley Thompson also scoring to make it a 7-5 game with 4:09 to go in the first. But down the stretch, Virginia Tech scored three times in the final 3:19 to take a 10-5 lead and momentum to halftime.
 
Out of the break, Thompson and Cami Lynch scored two of the first three goals to make it an 11-7 game with 23:05 to play, but Virginia Tech opened up a 5-0 run to take a 16-7 lead with 8:28 to go on the way to the win.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
Thompson scored half of Elon's goals with four on the day to match her career best. She also collected a team-best six draw controls. McGlynn, Lynch, Mackel and Curran each scored once to round out Elon's offense. Lynch also finished with three ground balls. Making her first-career start in goal, Paige Brown made 12 saves and picked up three ground balls.
 
Virginia Tech was paced by Emma Crooks' six goals and six draw controls. Paige Petty also scored four times and had four draw controls while Emma Harden had two goals and three ground balls. Morgan Berman finished with a team-high four ground balls while making five saves in goal.
 
UP NEXT
Elon will close the month of March with a trip to High Point on Wednesday, March 27. Opening draw is set for 6 p.m. at Vert Stadium on ESPN+.
