RICHMOND, Va. – Elon University men's tennis fell behind early after doubles and trailed 2-1 during singles action, but fought back to earn a 5-2 victory at Richmond on Saturday, March 2, at the Westhampton Tennis Courts.
 
Kyle Frankel clinched the Phoenix (8-2) victory at the No. 4 singles position. Elon battled back after dropping the doubles point and trailing 2-1 in the match in the early part of singles play. Felipe Sarrasague and Mario Paccini began the comeback before Frankel clinched the win.
 
Richmond (8-3) got a point from Campbell Erwin after doubles as his singles win on court six gave the Spiders a 2-1 lead in the match. Elon's win snapped Richmond's five-match win streak with the 5-2 victory.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
The Spiders won the doubles point taking wins at No. 3 and No. 1 doubles. Campbell Erwin and Klein Evans started doubles with a 6-4 win at No. 3, but Kyle Frankel and Camilo Ponce won 6-2 against George Lovitt and John Walsh at No. 2 doubles to level the point. In the deciding doubles match, Josh Keitelman and Matt Fernandez won a tiebreaker 7-6 (4) against Mario Paccini and Felipe Sarrasague at the No. 1 position.
 
In singles action, Osses-Konig began Elon's comeback with a 6-2, 6-2 victory at the No. 3 position to level the match. Erwin would get the lead back for Richmond with a win on court six, but Sarrasague leveled the contest again with a 7-6 (7-3), 6-1 win over Fernandez at No. 1 to make the score 2-2 in the match.
 
After Mario Paccini gave Elon its first lead at 3-2 with a 7-5, 7-5 victory over Brice Polender on court two, Frankel clinched the Phoenix victory on court four, rallying for a three-set victory 0-6, 6-2, 6-4 against Lovitt.
 
Ponce finished off the victory with a 7-5, 7-6 (7-5) win at the No. 5 position against Walsh, completing Elon's 5-2 victory over the Spiders.
 
UP NEXT
The Phoenix completes its trip to Richmond, Virginia tomorrow afternoon, March 3, with a 1 p.m. matchup against VCU.
