ELON, N.C. – With professional baseball in full swing, we take a look at former Elon standouts who are playing pro ball. Currently, there are six former Phoenix players that began the year with pro clubs along with the four who were selected in this year's MLB draft.

Elon's first player to reach the majors since 2006, right-handed pitcher John Brebbia has made 36 appearances this season for the St. Louis Cardinals. He is currently is 1-3 with a 3.40 ERA and has sat down 46 opposing hitters in 39.2 innings pitched. Brebbia earned the decision in a 4-0 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers on April 9 after striking out three and walking one in 1.1 scoreless innings of relief. He owned a 1.53 ERA through 29.1 innings heading into June, but was touched up for multiple runs in 3-of-5 outings to start the month. In his three seasons in St. Louis, Brebbia has made 131 career appearances. He is 4-6 with two saves and a 2.98 ERA over 142.0 innings pitched and has recorded 157 strikeouts. The Cards placed him on the paternity list this past Saturday as he and his wife, Amanda, are expecting their first child.

Infielder Nick Zammarelli III is playing Double-A ball with the Arkansas Travelers and is batting .250 (52-for-208) through 60 games. The Lincoln, R.I. native has belted seven home runs with seven doubles and a pair of triples. Zammarelli has turned in 16 multi-hit games, most recently a 3-for-3 outing in a 4-1 win over the Midland RockHounds on June 21. The Travelers (51-27 overall) are currently atop the Texas League North standings.

A 12th round selection by the Seattle Mariners last year, infielder Ryne Ogren was part of an April 24 trade with the Orioles for Mike Wright. The Devon, Pa. native is currently assigned to the Delmarva Shorebirds, who are first in the South Atlantic League Northern standings with a 57-23 overall record. Ogren started the season with the West Virginia Power, where he batted .174 (8-for-46) with a double, two home runs, and five RBIs in 13 games. He's having a better time in Salisbury, Md., where he owns a .237 average (32-for-135) with two doubles, a triple, and 11 RBIs in 43 appearances.

Selected in the eighth round of the 2018 Draft by the Baltimore Orioles, right-handed pitcher Ryan Conroy has spent time between the Aberdeen IronBirds, Delmarva, and the Frederick Keys. Currently with the IronBirds, he is 1-2 with a 2.84 ERA and 22 punch outs through 19.0 innings and four starts. He picked up a win on June 19 as he held the Tri-City ValleyCats to two runs, one earned, on three hits and as many walks. Conroy struck out three in a five-inning start to help Aberdeen to a 12-6 victory.

Playing in the Detroit Tigers farm system, right-hander Robbie Welhaf made one appearance for the Class A-Advanced Lakeland Flying Tigers before being sent to the Class A West Michigan Whitecaps. In nine games and five starts for the Whitecaps, he currently owns a 2-3 record with a 2.45 ERA and has struck out 39 across 36.2 innings of work. He earned victories over Bowling Green on May 21 and Fort Wayne on May 29 and fanned a season-high nine batters in a loss to Lake County on June 21.

Left-handed pitcher Jordan Barrett, who was drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in 2017, is currently with the Gateway Grizzlies of the independent Frontier League. Named the Opening Day starter, Barrett is now 1-4 with a 5.55 ERA through nine starts and has 52 strikeouts in 45.1 innings. He earned the win in a 8-2 final over the Joliet Slammers on May 16 after giving up two unearned runs on four hits and two walks. He tallied seven strikeouts in 6.0 innings.

Last month, right-hander George Kirby became Elon's highest pick in the Draft as he went to the Mariners with the 20th overall pick. The Rye, N.Y. native has since signed and will report to the short-season Single-A Everett Aquasox. However, he is not expected to take the mound until mid-July and will be limited to 20-30 innings. Meanwhile, he has racked up multiple All-American nods as Perfect Game and the ABCA named him a Second Teamer while Baseball America, the NCBWA, and D1 Baseball each named him to their Third Teams. Additionally, he earned NCCSIA All-State First Team honors.

Kyle Brnovich was the next Phoenix taken in this year's Draft, going to the Los Angeles Angels in the eighth round. A Third Team All-CAA selection and NCCSIA All-State Second Teamer, he is currently working out with the club in an on-boarding program and should go straight to low A or high A next year.

Righty Ty Adcock was taken a few picks after Brnovich by the Mariners, and Cam Devanney went to the Milwaukee Brewers in the 15th round. Both are currently in the Arizona League, with Adcock on the Mariners team and Devanney on the Brewers' Blue Team. A native of Oxford, N.C. and Elon's closer this past season, Adcock has yet to make his pro debut. Through 11 games, Devanney is hitting .304 (14-for-46) with a double, a triple, 10 runs scored, and three runs batted in. After only swiping three bags in 2019, he currently has five stolen bases. The Amherst, N.H. product has also turned in four multi-hit performances. In the team's June 18 meeting with the Royals, Devanney hit 2-for-4 and collected his first career RBI. Two days later against the White Sox, he went 3-for-7 as he doubled and tripled while scoring twice in a 14-inning affair. Last Tuesday, June 25, versus the Indians Red squad, he finished 3-for-6, crossed the plate three times, and drove in a run. On Sunday, he closed out the first month of his pro career with a perfect 3-for-3 performance in an 11-0 win over the Angels. Devanney scored twice, drove in a run, drew a pair of walks, and added a swiped bag.
