Elon Completes Day One of Elon Invitational

ELON, N.C. – Elon University women's tennis kicked off its 2019 fall schedule with day one of the Elon Fall Invitational on Friday, Sept. 13.
 
On day one, the Pheonix saw four athletes win their round one matchups in singles, and two duos win their matchups in doubles.
 
THE RUNDOWN
In singles play, Uma Nayar defeated Mercer's Alara Hollyfield in three sets. Nayar jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead, winning set one 6-3 before Hollyfield claimed set two 3-6. Nayar and Hollyfield would then battle it out in the third and final set, with Nayar claiming a close 7-6(6) victory. Nayar will face Malik Falk of Radford tomorrow at 10 a.m.
 
Additionally in singles, Alex Koniaev defeated Brianna Gomez of UNCG in straight sets, 6-2 and 6-4. Koniaev moves on to face Yunuen Elizarras in round two of Gold Singles play tomorrow at 10 a.m.
 
Kiana Rizzolo also picked up a win on day one of singles play, earning a win over Elin Hellberg from USC Upstate 6-2 and 6-5. She will face Emory's Stephanie Shulman in round two tomorrow at 10:30 a.m.
 
Also in singles action, Sofia Edo defeated Gabriella Cevallos in round one of the Phoenix Singles bracket, winning in straight set 6-1, 6-1. She moves on to face Emory's Katie Chang in round two tomorrow at 11 a.m.
 
In doubles play, Alex Koniaev and Uma Nayar highlighted day one, advancing to the semi-finals of the Maroon Doubles flight. Nayar and Koniaev teamed up to win their first two matches over Malik Falk and Drousile Dzeubou of Radford (7-5) and Erika Barquero and Hannah Giddings of UNCG (6-0).
 
Kiana Rizzolo and Victoria Saldh picked up a win over Maryann Rompf and Maggie Pate from Furman 6-2 in the Maroon Doubles Flight. They move on to face Alex Goetz and Christina Watson tomorrow at 8:30 a.m.

The Phoenix will be back in action tomorrow, Sept. 14, for day two of the Elon Invitational.
