ELON – The Elon University women's tennis team won all four of its doubles matches to open play at its final home tournament, the Phoenix Fall Invitational, on Saturday at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
Mariana Reding,
Lisa Kranec and
Helen Sarikulaya all went 3-0 across doubles and singles as all eight Phoenix posted at least one victory on the day. Elon added eight wins in singles to go along with its 4-0 day in doubles.
Reding's 3-0 ledger featured a comeback in her first singles match. The junior overcame a 3-6 loss in the first set to James Madison's Corinna Rietmann, winning the second 7-5 before taking the victory in a match tiebreak, 10-3. She then defeated Lily Doherty from Furman 6-4, 6-2, in the afternoon. Reding is now 7-3 this fall in singles.
Kranec and Sarikulaya both won their two singles matches in straight sets, with Kranec dropping just eight total games across her four frames. Sarikulaya came through a second-set tiebreak against Furman's Molly Robinson to finish her unbeaten day. Sarikulaya is the first Elon player to reach double-digit singles victories this fall, as the senior improved to 10-2 on the campaign.
In doubles, Reding teamed up with
Simone Bergeron for a 6-4 triumph over Charlotte's duo of Lucia Aranda and Yelyzaveta Chainykova. Kranec and
Cornelia Kack matched the result with a 6-4 victory of their own against Charlotte's Paula Dougherty and Andrea Chacon, while Sarikulaya and
Alexis Nyborg also won 6-4 against Ruby Broadbent and Taya Powell of Appalachian State.
Madison Cordisco and
Nathalie Marinovitch rounded out the perfect doubles slate with a 6-2 win against Appalachian State's Sreenidhi Balaji and Alexi Cleveland.
Cordisco and Kack also added wins in singles for the Phoenix. Cordisco won her lone singles contest of the day 6-2, 6-2 versus Cleveland.
Play at the Phoenix Fall Invitational will continue tomorrow with two rounds of doubles and a round of singles. The first round of doubles is scheduled for a 10 a.m. start.
