ELON, N.C.- After nearly a month and a half on the road, the Elon University women's basketball team returned to Schar Center and finished with an electrifying 42-point win over the College of Charleston 90-48 on Friday, Jan. 10.
Four Elon players finished the contest with double-digit scoring. Ariel Colón totaled a team-high 13 points and season-best 10 rebounds for her first double-double of the season and fourth of her career.
Saadia Munford was just one point behind her (12) while also recording a season-high five assists.
Kayla Liles and
Jaylin Powell also chipped in 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Charleston's Taylor Williams led the Cougars with 21 points, shooting 7-for-19 from the field.
HIGHLIGHTS
The Phoenix came out hot to start the game, outscoring the Cougars 13-0 in the first three minutes of play. Charleston answered with an 8-0 run to come back to within five, but Elon would not let the Cougars come any closer for the remainder of the game.
Elon shot 65.4 percent from the field en route to a 50-30 lead at the half.
The Phoenix defense took over in the third quarter, holding the Cougars scoreless from the field until there was five seconds left on the clock. The quarter ended with the Phoenix outscoring the Cougars 20-6.
The team's momentum carried over into the fourth, resulting in the win for the Phoenix.
NOTES
-Elon's record now stands at 7-7.
-Seven of the maroon and gold's first 15 made shots came from 3-point range.
-Collectively, the Phoenix set new season highs for points (90), field goal percentage (.491), free throws (30), rebounds (56), and assists (20).
-The Phoenix now leads the overall series 20-14.
