ELON, N.C.- The Elon University women's basketball team earned its third conference win of the season on Sunday, Jan. 12 when it came out on top against UNCW, 77-53.
Brie Perpignan totaled a game-best 22 points and eight field goals, setting new career highs, in addition to making all of her free throws (6).
Jaylin Powell also chipped in 14 points, shooting .500 (3-6) from beyond the arc to tie her season-best for single-game threes.
Lacey Suggs was the lone Seahawk to score in the double figures. The guard totaled 17 points, shooting 7-for-11 from the field.
HIGHLIGHTS
The Phoenix set the tone early on, taking the early lead and keeping it for the entire game. After jumping out to a 16-5 lead in the first quarter, Elon eventually grew its lead to 18 (36-18) by the end of the half.
Elon held UNCW to just nine points in each of the first two quarters. The maroon and gold have now held opponents to single digits in a quarter in back-to-back games.
Ariel Colón gave the Phoenix its largest advantage of the game (30) with 5:02 left in the fourth when she knocked down a free throw to make the score 69-39. Elon protected its lead for the remainder of the contest, resulting in the win.
NOTES
-The Phoenix now has an 8-7 (3-1 CAA) record on the season, ranking first in the conference.
-Elon shot .952 from behind the charity stripe for a new season high.
-The Phoenix outrebounded the Seahawks, 44-27, while its bench outscored UNCW's 37-12.
-The overall series between the teams now stands at 12-7 in favor of Elon.
