CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Elon University women's tennis fell in its season opener to the No. 2-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels 7-0 on Saturday, Jan. 11, at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.

Olivia Archer was the highlight of the match for Elon (0-1), giving No. 36 nationally ranked Alle Sanford a run for her money in their matchup in the No. 4 singles slot.  North Carolina (1-0) clinched the match on court three as three time All-American Makenna Jones toppedÂ
Uma Nayar to give the Tar Heels a 4-0 lead.

HIGHLIGHTS
North Carolina took the early 1-0 advantage by clinching the doubles point. After the doubles duo of Jones and Sanford took court one 6-0, Cameron Morra and Elizabeth Scotty clinched the point with a 6-2 victory at the No. 2 doubles position. The third doubles match went unfinished as
Victoria Saldh and
Sofia Edo trailed 4-1 in the set.

The Tar Heels then got off to a swift start in singles play behind No. 2 Morra's 6-0, 6-0 victory over
Alex Koniaev and No. 8 Alexa Graham's 6-0, 6-0 win over
Victoria Saldh. North Carolina would win courts two, one and three respectively to clinch the victory. Jones clinched the match with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over
Uma Nayar on the third court.

The Phoenix's top singles performer was
Olivia Archer. Archer battled No. 36 Alle Sanford before eventually dropping the first set 4-6. Sanford went on to win set two 6-1 to help North Carolina earn the victory.
