HEMPSTEAD, N.Y.- The Elon University women's basketball team topped Hofstra in Hempstead on Sunday, Jan. 19, 69-56.
Saadia Munford tied her career high for single-game points (20).
Jada Graves and Ariel Colón also chipped in 12 points apiece, while
Jaylin Powell dished out a season-high 4 assists. Graves' points matches her personal best for the season.
On defense, Graves matched her season high for steals (5) and tallied a season-best 4 assists.
Marianne Kaylin led the Pride with 16 points, while Jaylin Hines recorded a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds.
HIGHLIGHTS
Tyja Traore scored a layup to kickstart a 14-2 run with 4:28 left in the first quarter. Six Elon players scored in the run, including Traore,
Micaela Ryan, Colón,
Maya Johnson, Munford, and Powell. The Phoenix took a 23-8 lead going into the second.
Elon kept the Pride to eight and seven points in the first two quarters. The Phoenix have now held three of its past four opponents to single digits in a quarter.
The Phoenix went into halftime leading by 26 (41-15).
Despite the Pride coming back to within five points in the fourth quarter, Elon came through with the win. The Phoenix outscored Hofstra 6-0 in the two minutes of regulation to make the final score 69-56.
NOTES
-The Phoenix now has an 9-8 (4-2 CAA) record on the season.
-Elon shot .462 from the field (24-52).
-As a team, the Phoenix recorded a season-high 17 steals.
-The two teams finished with the same number of points in the paint (32) and bench points (14). However, the maroon and gold outscored the Pride 7-2 in points from fast breaks.
-With the win, Elon now leads the overall series, 10-3.
