ELON, N.C.- After 14 lead changes and eight ties, the Elon University women's basketball team suffered a 55-53 overtime loss against Drexel on Friday, Jan. 24.
Ariel Colón led the Phoenix with a game-high 14 points, shooting 5-of-12 from the field.
Brie Perpignan followed with nine points in addition to tying
Jada Graves for the team high in rebounds (6).
On defense, Graves recorded a game-best four steals. The guard has now posted at least three steals in six games this season.
Drexel's Bailey Greenberg and Keishana Washington totaled 13 points each. Niki Metzel and Greenberg also finished with eight rebounds apiece.
THE RUNDOWN
After trailing 18-8 at the end of the first quarter, the Phoenix outscored the Dragons 12-6 before heading into the locker room. With 3:04 left in the half,
Micaela Ryan hit a shot from deep to start a 5-0 run. Following a free throw from Colón,
Maya Johnson made another shot from behind the charity stripe to cut the Drexel lead to four and make the score 24-20 at the end of the half.
Elon took its first lead of the night at the start of the third, outscoring the Dragons 7-2 in the first three minutes of play. With 7:24 left in the quarter, a Perpignan and-one gave the Phoenix a one-point advantage (27-26). Drexel answered with a pair of field goals, but layups from Johnson and Munford gave Elon a 33-32 lead going into the fourth quarter.
Colón gave the maroon and gold its largest lead of the night (4) when she nailed a shot from deep to make the score 47-43 with 3:10 left in fourth quarter. After the teams traded points, Greenberg ended regulation pair of free throws that tied the score at 49 and sent the contest into overtime.
The teams continued to go back-and-forth in the overtime period. After the Phoenix took a two-point lead (53-51) with 1:38 on the clock, an and-one from Mariah Leonard put the Dragons up by one (54-53). Hannah Nihill followed with a free throw that resulted in the 55-53 score and win for Drexel.
NOTES
-The Phoenix now has an 9-9 (4-3 CAA) record on the season.
-Both teams posted 18 field goals, four shots from beyond the arc, and 37 rebounds in the contest.
-After keeping the Dragons to just six and eight points in the second and third quarters, the Phoenix have now held four of its past five opponents to single-digit scoring in at least one quarter.
-Drexel now leads the overall series 8-4.
