Elon Drops A Close One At Northeastern

Boston, Mass. – Elon University men's basketball fell to Northeastern, 77-68, on Thursday, Jan. 2.
 
The Phoenix was led by senior guard Marcus Sheffield, who dropped 17 points and eight rebounds on the evening. Freshman guard Hunter McIntosh chipped in 17 points, three rebounds and three assists in the loss.
 
Northeastern was led by Tyson Walker, who recorded a game-high 32 points in the contest.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
Elon came out of the gates firing early in the first half, going on a 10-0 run less than a minute into the contest. Hunter McIntosh's floater in the paint got things going, before Marcus Sheffield chipped in with a floater of his own. A few moments later, Hunter Woods knocked down his first triple of the evening, followed by a McIntosh three to put the Phoenix up by eight early.
 
After Northeastern tied the game at 12-12, both teams traded baskets for over the next seven minutes. Late in the first half, the Huskies put together a quick run to take a nine point lead into the break.

Trailing by nine with just over seven minutes to play in the second half, McIntosh gathered a loose ball and fired a deep triple that found the bottom of the net. On the next trip down the court, McIntosh dished a perfect pass to Chuck Hannah who scored the easy deuce. Moments later, Sheffield dropped in a tough mid-range jumper to cut the deficit to two.
 
Up by two with just under two and a half minutes to play, Northeastern went on a 8-0 run ocer the next two minutes to take home the win.

NOTES
- The Phoenix shot 47.4 percent from the floor, including a 38.5 percent clip from beyond the arc.
- Elon held a 14-3 advantage in 2nd chance points and a 9-2 advantage on the offensive glass
- Three Phoenix scored in double figures (Woods, McIntosh, Sheffield)

Elon will be back in action on Saturday, Jan. 4, to continue CAA play against Hofstra. That matchup will is scheduled for 4 p.m. in Hempstead, N.Y. and will be streamed live on FloSports.
