ELON, N.C.- Despite
Brie Perpignan scoring a career-high 26 points, the Elon University women's basketball team dropped an 84-77 matchup against William & Mary on Friday, Jan. 31.
Ariel Colón and
Maya Johnson were the other two Elon players in the double figures. Colón totaled 19 points in addition to 5 rebounds and four steals while Johnson matched her season best in points (10) and recorded six rebounds and two steals.
William & Mary's Eva Hodgson scored a game-best 34 points, shooting 8-11 from the field. She also made four shots from beyond the arc.
THE RUNDOWN
After being down by as much as 14 points in the third quarter, the Phoenix made a last-minute attempt to regain the lead. With 1:57 remaining in regulation, Elon went on a 12-4 run over a span of 76 seconds to bring the Phoenix back to within five points of the Tribe (75-70, 0:41). 10 of the points belonged to Perpignan, while the other two came from
Jada Graves. As the teams traded baskets in the remaining time, William & Mary maintained its advantage and got the win.
Elon took its only lead at the beginning of the game, outscoring William & Mary 8-4 in opening three minutes of competition. The Tribe answered with a 13-2 run of its own to erase the Phoenix lead and make the score 17-10.
The quarter ended with a 6-0 Elon run to cut the Tribe's lead to one (17-16).
William & Mary continued to build upon its momentum in the second, outscoring the Phoenix 16-10. The half ended with layups from Perpignan and Colón to make the score 33-26.
NOTES
-The Phoenix now has an 9-11 (4-5 CAA) record on the season.
-Perpignan's previous record for single-game points was 22, which she set earlier this season against UNCW on Sunday, Jan. 12.
-The maroon and gold outrebounded the Tribe 31-27.
-As a team, Elon shot .456 from the field.
-With the loss, the Phoenix holds a 10-7 overall record against the Tribe.
