HARRISONBURG, Va.- The Elon University women's basketball team came up short 61-48 in its matchup against James Madison on Sunday, Jan. 5.

Brie Perpignan led the Phoenix offense with a season-high 19 points, shooting 6-9 from the field.
Jaylin Powell and
Micaela Ryan followed with nine points apiece, with Ryan's points matching her career high. The sophomore's shots from deep (3) also tie her personal best.

Kamiah Smalls finished the contest with a game-best 24 points and 12 rebounds for the Dukes. Half of her points came from beyond the arc.
HIGHLIGHTS
After trailing by eight (12-4) with 1:28 left in the opening quarter, Powell and Ryan made back-to-back shots from beyond the arc put the Phoenix within 2 points of the Dukes (12-10). A JMU layup in the final minute made the score 14-10 at the end of the quarter.

With 3:36 left in the half and the Dukes leading by one (17-16), Perpignan scored three points on an and-one to ignite a 5-0 run and give Elon its only lead of the game. Powell scored the other pair from behind the charity stripe (21-17).

The Dukes went into halftime with a four-point advantage (27-23). Â

James Madison picked up the pace in the third, outscoring the Phoenix 19-9. Their momentum stayed with them for the remainder of the contest, resulting the win for the Dukes.

-Elon's record now stands at 6-7 on the season.
-The maroon and gold's bench outscored the James Madison bench 22-13.
-20 of the Phoenix's points came in the paint.
-James Madison now leads the overall series 11-4.
-Today's contest wraps up an eight-game road stretch that started with the pair of games at the UNLV Lady Rebel Round-Up on Nov. 30-Dec. 1. The next game for the Phoenix will be its first at Schar Center since Nov. 25, 2019.
