Phoenix Shuts Down Hofstra for Third Regular-Season Sweep

ELON, N.C.- The Elon University women's basketball team swept its third Colonial Athletic Association opponent of the regular season on Friday night when it defeated Hofstra, 67-50. The Phoenix won a 69-56 contest in Hempstead back on Jan. 19.

Kayla Liles led two other Elon players in double-figures with 15 points, followed by Saadia Munford (13) and Jaylin Powell (10). Liles also recorded a career high in shots made from deep (5). Her previous best was three, which she posted against the Pride on March 13, 2019.

Just one point in front of Liles was Hofstra's Sorelle Ineza, who finished the game with 16 to lead both teams. Sandra Karsten also chipped in 11 while shooting 5-of-7 from the field.

THE RUNDOWN
Elon got things going at the start of the game, outscoring the Pride 8-0. Hofstra made a comeback to take a 9-8 lead, but the Phoenix held the Pride scoreless in the final minutes of the quarter while tacking on nine more points to give the team a 17-9 lead.

After taking an 11-point lead at the half (35-24), the Phoenix held on to its double-digit advantage for the majority of the second half. With 7:14 left in the game, Powell made her second of two free throws to give Elon largest lead of the night (23) and make the score 60-37. The two teams exchanged points the rest of the way, but the Phoenix came out on top.
