Women's Tennis Prepares For Weekend Matchups With Longwood And Davidson

ELON, N.C. – Elon University women's tennis returns to action this weekend for matches against Longwood and Davidson respectively. Those contests are slated for Saturday, Feb. 15, at 1 p.m. and Sunday, Feb. 16, at 1:00 p.m.

THE SERIES
- Saturday marks the fourth matchup between Elon and Longwood in program history, with Elon leading the overall series 2-1.
- The last time these two programs met, Elon took home a 6-1 victory on March 1, 2013.
- Elon's matchup with Davidson marks the 19th time the two programs will meet.
- In the most recent contest, Elon defeated Davidson, 4-3, on Feb. 17, 2019

ABOUT ELON
- The Phoenix is off to an 5-4 start to the season, and is currently 4-1 in matches played at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center
- Most recently, Elon rounded out a 1-1 week after beating Methodist 6-0, and falling to Campbell in a battle, 5-2.
- Victoria Saldh led the way for the Phoenix, outlasting Lea Cutura in a three-set battle, 4-6, 6-4, 6-0. Saldh also combined with Sofia Edo to take down the Camels' Lucile Pons and Inma Ramon, 7-6, en route to helping Elon secure the doubles point.
- The Phoenix dominated in singles play, with three players winning their respective matches in straight sets without allowing a single point. Sofia Edo bested Methodist's Natalie Collins 6-0, 6-0 to give Elon an early lead in the match. Nicole Shiau and Shauna Galvin each swept their matches as well, defeating Luciana Forma and Hannah Higgins 6-0, 6-0 respectively.
- Elon returned five players from a 2018-19 team that posted a 13-12 dual match record and finished its season falling to top seeded William & Mary 4-3 in the semifinals of the CAA Tournament at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
- The Phoenix is returning 2019 CAA Second-Team Singles selection Olivia Archer as well as 2019 CAA Second-Team Doubles selections Alex KoniaevNicole Shiau and Uma Nayar. In 2019, Archer went 17-4 in singles, while Koniaev combined with Maria Paraja to go 9-8 in No. 1 doubles and Nayar/Shiau finished 11-4 in No. 2 doubles.
- The Phoenix is led by head coach Elizabeth Anderson, who begins her 16th season at the helm for Elon. Anderson currently holds 216 career victories.


SCOUTING LONGWOOD
- Longwood is in its third season under head coach Jhonnatan Medina Alvarez, who led the team to a 12-10 record last season.
- The Lancers are off to a 3-0 start to this season after defeating Christopher Newport, 5-2, in its most recent outing.
- Longwood boasts a roster with three upper classmen (two seniors, one junior) and three underclassmen (two sophomores, one freshman).
 
SCOUTING DAVIDSON
- Davidson is in its third season under head coach Susanne Depka, who served as an assistant coach with the program for three seasons prior to becoming head coach
- Davidson is off to a 2-3 start to this season after outlasting Kennesaw State, 4-3, in its most recent contest.
- The Wildcats other win this season came by way of a 7-0 defeat of Queens of Charlotte on Jan. 26.

UP NEXT
Following this weekend's matches, the Phoenix will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 22, to take on UNCW. That matchup is slated to begin at 12 p.m. at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
