ELON, N.C. – Elon University baseball pulled away with five runs down the stretch to earn a 7-2 win over visiting Delaware State on Saturday afternoon, Feb. 15 at Latham Park. The Phoenix improves to 2-0 overall.
Adam Spurlin hit his second home run in as many games, finishing 2-for-4 at the plate. He added a double with two runs and a pair of RBIs.
Matt Oldham also had a 2-for-4 effort,
Joe Satterfield went 1-for-3 with a double, and
J.P. Sponseller collected his first career hit and also batted 1-for-3.
Trevor Kirk earned the win after 1.1 innings of relief. He allowed one earned run on one hit and a walk with one strikeout. Starter
Spencer Bauer fanned eight batters through 4.2 innings of work, holding the guests to one run on three hits and five walks.
Brian Edgington took the ball from Kirk and tallied four punch outs across 2.0 innings, and
Joe Sprake pitched the ninth with one strikeout.
How It Happened: Tyler Cranston drew a walk to lead off the third inning and proceeded to steal second. The Delaware State shortstop couldn't make the catch on the throw to second, and Cranston hustled to third as the ball dribbled out to center field. Classmate
Anthony Galason then brought him home with a ground out to short. Elon added to its total with another run in the fourth as Spurlin swung at the first pitch he saw and skied it over the wall in left.
Much like Friday's game, the Hornets (0-2) came back to knot the score at 2-2. DSU got going in the top of the fifth with a leadoff walk, a sacrifice bunt, and a double to right. In the sixth, DSU's Tyler Cunningham singled up the middle before benefiting from a pair of wild pitches. Standing on third, he tagged up on a Mark Herron sacrifice fly to straight-away center. However, Elon wrestled back control in the home half of the frame. Satterfield reached on a Hornets fielding error and stole second.
Garrett Stonehouse moved him over with a sac bunt and Oldham beat out a hit to first, allowing Satterfield to run the last 90 feet.
Tyler Stanley entered the game as a pinch runner in the seventh and later came in on an
Alex Iadisernia sac fly to right. The Phoenix then created some final separation with a three-run eighth. Sponseller brought home Stonehouse on a ground out to second, a Spurlin double to right center plated
Jayson Arendt, and a
Jarrett Pico bloop single to shallow center secored the final run.
