Phoenix Prepares for Home Opener Against Howard Monday

ELON, N.C.—The Elon University women's basketball team returns to Schar Center to host Howard in its home opener on Monday, Nov. 15 at 7 p.m.

THE MATCHUP
-This will be the first meeting between the two teams.

SCOUTING THE PHOENIX
-The Phoenix (1-0) edged reigning Big South Champion High Point on the road in its season opener on Nov. 9, 68-66.
-Brie Perpignan paced the maroon and gold in scoring with 23 points, posting a career-high nine field goals on the night. The senior also finished just one assist shy of per personal best with six in addition to tying Evonna McGill for the team-high in rebounds (7).
-Other double-digit scorers included McGill (15) and Ariana Nance (12). McGill went 5-of-10 from the field and 5-of-6 from behind the charity stripe, while Nance made three-of-eight field goals and all five free throws. Nance also matched her personal best in blocks (2).
-Elon was picked to place sixth in the Colonial Athletic Association preseason poll. Perpignan was also named All-CAA honorable mention. 
-Charlotte Smith is in her 11th season as head coach. Her coaching record at Elon currently stands at 170-130, just three wins away from breaking the program record for all-time wins.

SCOUTING HOWARD
-The Bison enters the game with an 0-2 record, suffering losses against Houston (48-80) and North Texas (56-94).
-In Howard's most recent game against the Mean Green, Iyanna Warren led the Howard offense with 19 points and four assists, just two points shy of a career-high. Anzhane' Hutton also recorded 11 points in addition to tying Krislyn Marsh in boards (7).
-The Bison were named the favorite in the 2021-22 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) preseason poll. Hutton, Kaiya Creek, and Iyanna Warren were named named to the preseason All-MEAC team.
-Howard earned the MEAC Northern Division Title in addition to a trip to the MEAC tournament final last season, posting a 15-4 (10-2, MEAC) record.
-The head coach of Howard is reigning MEAC Coach of the Year Ty Grace.

UP NEXT
Elon will be back on the road on Thursday, Nov. 18 when it matches up against Richmond at 6 p.m.
