ELON, N.C. – The Elon University women's basketball team outscored Howard 28-14 in the fourth quarter to secure a 16-point victory over the Bison on Monday, Nov. 15, 60-44.
"There's a lot of things we can take away from this game in order to be better," said head coach
Charlotte Smith. "But I was pleased with the second half and how we executed and moved the ball and shared the basketball."
THE RUNDOWN
-It was a low scoring first quarter as the Bison outscored the Phoenix 11-9.
-Neither team added to its score during the first half of the second quarter. In the remaining time, both Elon and Howard managed to score six points apiece to make the halftime score 17-15 in favor of the Bison.
-Howard came out strong in the third, building its lead to seven (25-18) with 7:33 on the clock. Elon then responded with a 14-5 run to take a two-point lead going into the final 10 minutes of play (32-30).
-The fourth quarter belonged to the maroon and gold.
Kayla Liles ignited a 9-0 run with 8:32 remaining when she hit her second shot of the night from deep. The momentum went on to stay with the maroon and gold through the remainder of the game.
-The Phoenix took its largest lead of the contest (16) in the final minute of the matchup when
Vanessa Taylor completed an and one for the final points of the night.
NOTES
-
Ariana Nance led the Elon offense with a career-high 13 points. The senior also shot 5-of-12 from the field, matching her personal best.
-
Evonna McGill was the other double-digit scorer for Elon. The center totaled 10 points in addition to posting two steals, one assist, seven rebounds, and four blocks for a new career high.
-Liles finished just one point shy of a double-double, recording a team-high 10 rebounds and nine points on the night. All of her points came from beyond the arc.

Maya Johnson finished the game with eight points and eight rebounds on the night, with seven of her boards coming in the second half.
-For the second game in a row,
Brie Perpignan registered a team-best six assists in addition to totaling eight points on the night.
-Tonight's matchup marked the first ever between the two teams.
-Smith's record is now 171-130, just two wins away from breaking the program record for all-time wins.
-The Phoenix stands at 2-0 on the season, while Howard falls to 0-3.
