Women’s Basketball Erases 19-Point Deficit to Defeat UNCG, 52-49

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Elon University women's basketball team overcame a 19-point deficit in the second half against UNCG as the Phoenix delivered a three-point victory over the Spartans, 52-49.

"We got off to a very rough start and had no rhythm," said head coach Charlotte Smith. "I am glad we were able to play a better fourth quarter. It was an ugly win, but we will take it."
 
THE RUNDOWN
-The Spartans jumped out to an early 9-0 in the first three minutes of the contest. UNCG held a 5 to 9 point lead for the remainder, ultimately resulting in a 15-10 first-quarter score.  
-UNCG grew its lead into the double digits in the second, which lasted into the fourth quarter.
-The Phoenix ignited in the final 10 minutes of play, outscoring the Spartans 17-3.
-Following a free throw by UNCG, Ariana Nance kickstarted the 17-2 run that lasted for the rest of the contest with a driving layup with 9:40 on the clock.   
-On the 19 second mark, Evonna McGill tied the game with a layup in the paint, forcing a UNCG timeout.
-Brie Perpignan took the final shot of the contest with an and one to take away the Spartans' lead at the one second mark and bring home the win for the maroon and gold.  
 
NOTES
-Perpignan paced the Elon offense with 14 points, shooting 4-of-8 from the field and 6-of-9 from behind the charity stripe, while Nance followed with 11.
-Defensively, McGill recorded a career-high five blocks, while Kayla Liles totaled a team-high three steals. Liles matched her season high in assists (6) to lead both teams.
-With the win, Elon improves to 7-2 on the season.
-The Phoenix is off to its best nine-game start since the 2017-18 season when it started out 7-2.
