ELON, N.C. – After rallying from a 1-0 deficit in the bottom of the ninth inning, Elon University baseball earned the walk-off 2-1 victory over UNCW on Friday, April 23 at Latham Park as
Parker Haskin scored on a
Jack Roberts sacrifice bunt in the 10th.
"That was a great college baseball game," said head coach
Mike Kennedy. "Two arms going toe-to-toe! We knew we were going to have to really pitch it with [Landen] Roupp on the mound for them! He's special. Our guys stepped up to the challenge.
Brian Edgington was outstanding!
Kyle Greenler does his job and I can't say enough about
Trevor Kirk and those two big punch outs! Offensively it was a grind. Not a lot of great things happening but we never quit!
Anthony Galason and
Garrett Stonehouse deliver late and we took advantage of a mistake on a great bunt by Roberts to win it!"
ON THE MOUND
Kirk improved to 3-1 after striking out two and walking one without giving up a hit in 0.2 innings out of the pen. Edgington held the Seahawks (18-14, 4-6 CAA) to one earned run on four hits and two walks through an 8.0-inning start. He finished with eight strikeouts on the night. Greenler also made an appearance and gave up just one hit without issuing a walk over 1.1 innings in relief.
AT THE PLATE
Stonehouse finished 1-for-3 and added an RBI and a base on balls.
Justin Cassella, Galason and Haskin all went 1-for-4 for Elon's other hits. Galason and Haskin both scored once, and Galason also swiped a bag.
THE RUNDOWN
The game was a pitchers' duel throughout, with UNCW breaking through in the top of the fourth as Noah Bridges connected on the first pitch he saw for the two-out solo home run to right. The Phoenix (12-16, 5-5 CAA) had an opportunity to pull even in the sixth. Cassella led off with a single up the middle and was moved up to second on a
Tyler Cranston sac bunt. The freshman from Bernardsville, N.J. then took third on an
Alex Iadisernia ground out to second, but was left stranded as Galason looked at a called third strike.
UNCW looked to add to its lead in the eighth as a pair of two-out singles placed runners on first and second, but
Cole Reynolds fielder a ground ball right at him and stepped on first to get out of the inning. The leadoff Seahawk batter reached on a hit to center in the top of the ninth, but was erased as Haskin threw down to
Carlos Marte who applied the tag in time. In the bottom of the ninth, Roupp looked to wrap up the complete-game shutout as he struck out the first two batters. With a 2-2 count, Galason then singled to center and proceeded to steal second. After Reynolds walked and
Luke Coker pinch ran for him, Stonehouse smacked a 1-2 pitch to right to bring home Galason as Elon pulled even at 1-1.
In the 10th inning, a Seahawk runner was placed on second due to the international tie-breaking rule. UNCW moved the runner up on a sac bunt as Elon brought in Kirk with one out. After striking out the first batter he faced, the Wake Forest, N.C. native didn't get the call on the 3-2 pitch as the visitors placed runners on the corners. However, Kirk came through with a strike out looking to keep it a 1-1 game. Haskin then started the home half of the frame on second as Roberts led off. The redshirt junior out of Frederick, Md. looked to lay down the sacrifice bunt, but UNCW's second baseman couldn't squeeze the throw to first. The error allowed Haskin to touch home plate as Elon completed the comeback victory.
