Baseball Wins 5-4 in Extras to Pull Even in the CAA Series

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Anthony Galason hit 4-for-5 with a home run and Spencer Bauer held UNCW to two runs over seven innings as Elon University baseball evened the CAA series with a 5-4 win in 10 innings on Saturday afternoon, April 3 at Brooks Field.

"This group is showing some resilience," head coach Mike Kennedy said after the game. "Really proud of Bauer. Both he and Joe Savino in their first conference starts as freshmen went toe-to-toe with two of the best arms in this league. Galason had a big day at the plate and came up with big time hits for us. Can't say enough about Brian Edgington and where he's at right now. Comes in in a tough spot and makes some great pitches! Good team win tonight!"

ON THE MOUND
Joe Sprake picked up the win and improved to 3-0 on the season. He allowed two runs, one of them earned, on two hits and one walk through 1.1 innings pitched. Edgington earned his second save of the year as he struck out both of the batters he faced. Bauer limited the hosts to two runs on six hits and one walk. The Manasquan, N.J. native finished with seven strikeouts through a 7.0-inning start. Kyle Greenler also made an appearance, allowing one hit and one walk with one punch out in 1.0 complete inning of work.

AT THE PLATE
Galason also scored twice and drove in two runs to lead Elon on offense. Tyler Cranston finished 1-for-1 in his only plate appearance as a pinch hitter. Alex Iadisernia and Cole Reynolds both went 1-for-4, scored a run and walked. Jarrett Pico also hit 1-for-4 with an RBI, Garrett Stonehouse turned in a 1-for-5 outing with two RBIs, and Matt Oldham scored the team's other run and added a base on balls.

THE RUNDOWN
UNCW jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. After Brooks Baldwin went down swinging, Jac Croom singled up the middle and Cole Weiss followed with a single to center field. The Seahawks (14-9, 3-5 CAA) then executed the double steal before Matt Suggs brought both runners home with a hit back up the middle.

The Phoenix (7-12, 1-1) responded with three runs on as many hits in the top of the second. Reynolds drew a leadoff walk and went from first to third on a Galason hit to the gap in right. Oldham earned a base on balls to run the bags full and Stonehouse tied the game at 2-2 with a two-RBI single to center. Pico then singled with runners on the corners to put Elon in front, 3-2.

Elon added an insurance run in eighth inning as Galason connected on the first pitch he saw for the solo home run. The hosts looked to start a rally in the home half of the inning with two outs and runners on first and second, but Greenler was able to fool the batter with the 1-2 pitch and Oldham threw to Reynolds at first to end the threat.

The Seahawks were able to pull even in the ninth. Noah Bridges reached on an Elon fielding error, then advanced to third on a Dillon Lifrieri double down the left field line. Bridges then came around on the Noah Liles ground out to first, and a Taber Mongero bloop single to left knotted the game at 4-4.

Iadisernia was placed on second to start the 10th due to the international tie-breaking rule. The redshirt freshman was waved home on a Galason hit to left, and the UNCW catcher couldn't hold onto the ball as Iadisernia was safe on the play at the plate. Croom started off on second to start the home half of the inning and he took third on a Weiss sacrifice bunt. A walk then placed runners on first and third, but Edgington closed the door with back-to-back strikeouts as Elon held on for the win.
