ELON, N.C. – Throughout the summer, we're looking at former Elon University baseball standouts who are playing at the next level. The Phoenix currently has 10 alumni who are playing professionally.
After three seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals,
John Brebbia signed a one-year contract with the San Francisco Giants back on Dec. 21, 2020. The first Elon player to reach the majors since 2006, he recently finished his recovery from Tommy John surgery and was activated to the Giants 40-man roster on June 20. Brebbia made his return to the mound this past Sunday in an 11-2 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies. The right-hander entered in the top of the ninth, retiring the side with a pair of line outs and a strikeout swinging to end the game. Against the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday, June 23, he pitched the bottom of the 11th inning in a 9-3 road win for the Giants. After intentionally walking the first batter he faced, he induced a 6-4-3 double play and got out of the inning with a ground out to short.
An eighth-round selection by the LA Angels in the 2019 MLB Draft,
Kyle Brnovich was traded to the Baltimore Orioles on Dec. 4, 2019 and was assigned to the High-A Aberdeen IronBirds on May 4 this year. While with the IronBirds, he compiled a 4-1 record and a 2.36 ERA across eight starts. The Milton, Ga. native allowed 16 runs, nine of them earned, on 18 hits and 11 walks while tallying 48 strikeouts through 34.1 innings pitched. Brnovich was promoted to the Double-A Bowie Baysox on June 22 and is expected to make his Double-A debut in tonight's game versus the New Hampshire Fisher Cats.
George Kirby became the first Phoenix to be taken in the first round of the MLB Draft when the Seattle Mariners took him with the 20th overall pick in 2019. Kirby has emerged as one of the top prospects in the Mariners farm system and was a non-roster invitee to the team's Spring Training. Currently with the High-A Everett AquaSox, he owns a 2-2 record and a 3.48 ERA in five starts. He has held opponents to 10 runs, eight earned, on 19 hits and just four walks and is up to 22 punch outs in 20.2 innings pitched.
A 15th round pick by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 2019 Draft,
Cam Devanney has played in 32 games for the Double-A Biloxi Shuckers. His current season totals include a .157 clip (16-for-102) with three home runs, three doubles, nine runs, 11 RBIs, 12 walks and one stolen base. He delivered a walk-off sacrifice fly to help the Shuckers to a 4-3 extra-innings win over the Mississippi Braves on June 11.
An eighth-round selection by the Mariners in 2019,
Ty Adcock has yet to make his pro debut. The Oxford, N.C. native had surgery on a torn UCL back in April and was assigned to the Low-A Modesto Nuts on May 4. He is currently listed on the team's 7-day injured list.
Ryne Ogren started off his summer with the IronBirds, where he hit .125 (1-for-8) with one run, two RBIs and two walks in three appearances. He was sent to the Low-A Delmarva Shorebirds on June 22 and went 1-for-4 in a 3-2 loss to the Fredericksburg Nationals on June 23.
Ryan Conroy began the season with the Shorebirds and went 1-1 with two saves and a 3.48 ERA in five outings. He gave up five runs (four earned) on 10 hits and five walks with 15 strikeouts across 10.1 innings. Conroy joined the IronBirds on May 25 and is 0-0 with one save and an 8.00 ERA through six relief appearances and 9.0 innings pitched. His other totals with the IronBirds include eight earned runs on 11 hits and six walks against 15 strikeouts.
Elon also has three alumni playing in the independent Frontier League.
Nick Zammarelli owns a .178 average (19-for-107) in 28 games with Kane County Cougars. He has scored 13 runs and driven in 12 with six doubles, three homers and seven walks. He posted a 2-for-5 outing on June 18 at the Milwaukee Milkmen. Zammarelli doubled twice and added a run and an RBI to help his team to an 8-2 victory.
Jordan Barrett is in his second season as a member of the Gateway Grizzlies. Through five starts, he is 0-3 with a 6.85 ERA and has been tagged for 19 runs (17 earned) on 22 hits and 20 walks. Barrett leads the Grizzlies with 27 strikeouts and has tossed 22.1 innings. Finally,
