Women’s Basketball Earns First Conference Victory with 65-60 Win Over Charleston

ELON, N.C. -- The Elon University women's basketball team picked up its first Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) win of the season on Jan. 14 as it delivered a 65-60 victory over College of Charleston.

"First off, I just want to say our thoughts and prayers are with Coach Smith and her family," said assistant coach Josh Wick. "I thought the girls did a great job all week long of trying to lock in and play for her. Our kids, I thought responded tremendously well. There was just a great energy in the locker room before the game. I think they were excited to play and to play at home again, to finally be back after a rough road trip last weekend."

Wick filled in for head coach Charlotte Smith, who did not attend the game due to a personal situation.

-Elon held Charleston to single-digit scoring in the first quarter, outscoring the Cougars 17-8. Kayla Liles registered a team-high eight points in the frame.
-Charleston was quick to respond in the second, cutting Elon's lead to just one with 1:26 remaining. However, Tyja Traore and Brie Perpignan followed with a pair of layups to give the Phoenix a two-point halftime advantage (28-26).
-The third quarter was tight, with the Cougars pulling ahead for the first time with just under nine minutes remaining (30-31). Just over a minute later, Perpignan scored five unanswered points to put Elon up 38-34. The teams traded baskets for the remainder of the quarter before Ajia James banked in a three pointer to beat the buzzer to grow the Phoenix advantage to three (44-41) heading into the final 10 minutes of play.
-The Phoenix pulled away in the fourth quarter, stretching its lead to nine points with just under five minutes left. With just over a minute remaining, Liles hit a three ball to put Elon ahead by six, and Ariana Nance scored the final two points of the night at the free throw line to secure Elon's 65-60 win.
