Phoenix Topped by Northeastern

BOSTON, Mass. -- Elon women's basketball dropped a 68-52 decision to Northeastern on Jan. 21.
 
THE RUNDOWN
-Northeastern got going early as the Huskies opened the game with a 9-0 run. However, the Phoenix responded with a 14-2 run of their own to take a three-point lead with 4:10 left the first quarter (14-11). Northeastern outscored the maroon and gold 9-2 in the remaining time to make the score 20-16 heading into the second period.  
-Following a fast break layup by Brie Perpignan and Elon leading 25-24 (4:16, 2Q), Northeastern closed the half with an 9-0 run to hold an eight-point advantage at the intermission (33-25).    
-The teams traded baskets throughout the third quarter, with the Phoenix coming within striking distance twice during the 10 minutes of play. Ajia James knocked down a jumper off a Northeastern turnover with 1:24 on the clock to cut the lead to two (40-42), but the Huskies scored five unanswered points to bring its lead back up to seven (40-47).
-Northeastern took its largest lead of the night (18) on a fast break layup in the final 85 seconds of the contest (49-67). A free throw by Vanessa Taylor and a field goal by Peyton Carter brought the Elon score up to 52, but a free throw by the Huskies in the final seconds secured the 16-point victory for Northeastern.
 
NOTES
-Perpignan continues to lead the Phoenix offense. The guard posted a team-high 19 points, including 16 in the first half, on 7-of-15 shooting from the field.
-Defensively, Perpignan also recorded a pair of blocks to match her career high in addition to delivering a team-best three steals over the course of the game.
-James was the other double-digit scorer for the Phoenix, posting 10 points on the night. She was also second on the roster in rebounds (7) behind Maya Johnson (9).
-Elon's bench outscored Northeastern's bench 21-10.
-With the loss, the maroon and gold now holds a 9-5 (1-3 CAA) record.

UP NEXT
The Phoenix heads to Hempstead, N.Y. to take on Hofstra on Sunday, Jan. 23 at 1 p.m.
