Women’s Tennis Hosts Jimmy Powell Invitational for Final Fall Tournament

ELON, N.C. – The Elon University women's tennis team wraps up its fall season this weekend when it hosts the Jimmy Powell Invitational on Friday and Saturday at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center. 
 
TOURNAMENT INFORMATION
  • Play on both Friday and Saturday is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. Friday will feature one round of doubles beginning at 10 a.m. and two rounds of singles, one beginning at 11 a.m. and the next at 2:30 p.m. Saturday will see two rounds of doubles, one beginning at 10 a.m. and the next at 11 a.m., and one round of singles beginning at 1 p.m. 
  • Live stats and live video will not be available for the tournament. 
  • Admission to the tournament is free. 
  • Other teams participating in the Invitational include Campbell, Navy, Liberty and Wake Forest. 
  • A points system will determine the overall winners for singles and doubles. If a student-athlete wins a match in the No. 1 flight, they will get six points. If they win a match in the No. 2 flight they get five points. Winning the No. 3 flight will earn four points and so on. The 6-8 flights will be getting one point for matches won. The same system will be used for doubles play. Winning a match in the No. 1 flight gets four points, the No. 2 flight gets three points, etc.
LAST TIME OUT
  • The Phoenix last competed at the ITA Carolina Regionals in Winston Salem on Oct. 13-15. 
  • Helen Sarikulaya, Shauna Galvin, Olivia Archer, Julie Ball and Madison Cordisco all posted one singles victory for the Phoenix.
  • Sarikulaya's 6-3, 6-1 triumph over North Carolina A&T's Cielo Tapia-Cruz in the opening round of the qualifying draw improved her singles record to 7-0 on the fall. She suffered the first singles defeat of her Elon career in the next round, as she fell 7-5, 6-0 to Furman's Luca Vocke. 
  • Cordisco won a tight 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 encounter in the opening round of the qualifying singles draw against Charleston Southern's Amila Jusufbegovic before falling in the second to Charlotte's Lucie Petruzelova, 7-6 (4), 6-3. 
  • Ball's win also came in the opening round of the qualifying singles draw, as the senior defeated Khyanna Singh of Charleston Southern 7-6 (4), 7-5. She lost in the second round to Western Carolina's Madison Schwarz, 6-4, 6-1. 
  • After picking up her fourth singles win of the season, Galvin advanced to the round of 16 in the B1 singles draw, where she was defeated 6-1, 6-3 by Maryam Ahmad of Wake Forest. 
  • Archer recovered after losing the second set against Tiffany Pyritz of Charleston Southern to win 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 (4) and advance to the round of 16 in the B2 singles draw. She lost her next match 7-5, 6-2 to Wofford's Emely Kahrs. 
  • Ball and Archer teamed up for a tight 8-7 (5) doubles victory over Amelie Allard and Jill Morse of Queens. 
  • The freshman tandem of Sarikulaya and Cordisco earned an 8-5 win in doubles against the Queens duo of Lucianna Piedra and Claudia Sanchez Quesada. 
  • The maroon and gold finished the week with five singles wins and two doubles victories. 
ABOUT THE PHOENIX
  • Elon is coming off a strong spring in which it went 17-9 and finished as the runner-up at the CAA Championship.
  • The returnees include graduate Olivia Archer (All-CAA third team in singles); seniors Julie BallShauna Galvin and Sibel Tanik (All-CAA first team in singles and second team in doubles); junior Lizette Reding (All-CAA second team in singles and doubles); and sophomore Sarah Allen.
  • The Phoenix also welcomes three newcomers in sophomore Miray Konar — a transfer from Western Carolina — and freshmen Madison Cordisco and Helen Sarikulaya. Konar, from Izmir, Turkey, went 7-5 in singles and 10-6 in doubles while playing primarily in the No. 2 spot for the Catamounts last season. A Pittsburgh native, Cordisco was considered a five-star recruit by tennisrecruiting.net. Sarikulaya, from Rockville, Md., was also a five-star recruit and reached as high as No. 7 in the USTA Girls' 18 national standings.
  • Elon is led by Elizabeth Anderson, who is beginning her 19th season at the helm.
LAST YEAR AT THE JIMMY POWELL INVITATIONAL
  • Tanik earned co-champion honors in singles at last year's Invitational after going 2-0 in singles. She also teamed up with Reding to win the doubles championship, as the pair earned five victories. 
  • All eight Elon players picked up at least one victory in singles. Alison O'Dea also went 2-0 for the week in singles while Archer, Ball, Galvin, Sarah Allen, Victoria Saldh and Lizette Reding all won one match.
