Women’s Tennis Finishes Jimmy Powell Invitational Undefeated in Singles

ELON, N.C.  – The Elon University women's tennis team swept its singles session on Saturday at the Jimmy Powell Invitational to finish the tournament with a perfect 18-0 singles record. Elon hosted the Invitational at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
 
"The team has worked incredibly hard this fall and I am tremendously proud of them," head coach Elizabeth Anderson said. "To go undefeated in singles and 8-3 in doubles at the Jimmy Powell Invitational is very impressive. They showed so much toughness, grit and determination. We look forward to continuing to work hard and fine tuning their games in the coming weeks to prepare for the spring season." 
 
Sibel Tanik earned singles champion honors, as the senior won all three of her singles matches to finish the event with 12 points. She defeated Navy's Emily Tannenbaum 6-2, 6-2 on Saturday to finish the event 6-0 in singles sets.
 
Tanik also earned champion honors in doubles with partner Lizette Reding. The tandem went 2-1 in the event, earning eight points to narrowly beat out the Navy team of Jillian Taggart and Sia Chaudry, who earned seven. 

Freshman Helen Sarikulaya joined Tanik as the only players in the tournament to finish the week with a perfect 6-0 record in singles sets. She earned a 6-4, 7-6 (4) victory against Jillian Taggart of Navy.
 
Madison Cordisco and Lizette Reding posted singles wins on Saturday to finish the tournament 3-0 in singles. Cordisco beat Navy's Casey Accola 6-2, 6-1 and Reding came from a set down to beat Navy's Stella Ribaudo 5-7, 7-6 (4), 10-8. 
 
Julie Ball and Olivia Archer also tallied wins on Saturday to finish the event 2-0 in singles. Archer did not lose a game in her 6-0, 6-0 win over Hanna Elks Smith of Navy. 
 
The Phoenix posted five doubles victories on the day to finish the week with an 8-3 mark in doubles for the event. The teams of Ball and Archer and Cordisco and Sarikulaya both went 2-0 on the day.
