Elon Returns Home To Host Campbell On Saturday Afternoon

ELON, N.C. – Elon University men's tennis returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 19, when it hosts Campbell in a 1 p.m. matchup at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
 
GAMEDAY COVERAGE
- Saturday's action will begin with doubles play at 1 p.m. with singles to follow shortly after.

THE MATCHUP
- Saturday afternoon marks the 12th meeting between Elon and Campbell.
- The Phoenix is currently leading in the all-time series, 9-2.
- In the most recent meeting between the two programs, Campbell defeated Elon, 4-3, on Feb. 22, 2020.
- The Phoenix holds a 5-1 mark at home against the Camels.

SCOUTING ELON
- Elon enters this contest with an 1-4 overall record after defeating Longwood in its most recent outing.
- Daniel Martin is leading the way for Elon in singles play, as the sophomore has a 2-2 overall record, including a 1-0 mark in the No. 3 slot. Martin has also combined with Chung-Han Tsai to pick up the most doubles wins on the team with two.
- Nicholas Campbell, Camilo Ponce, Chung-Han Tsai and Ben Zipay are all tied for second on the team in singles victories with one.
- The combination of Nicholas Campbell and Nicholas Condos has started the year off strong for Elon, posting a team-best 2-1 mark as a duo. The tandem is 2-0 in the No. 3 doubles slot after earning wins against Duke and Liberty.
- Elon returned three All-CAA honorees this season in Kyle Frankel (1st Team; 2nd Team Doubles), Camilo Ponce (2nd Team; 2nd Team Doubles) and Chung-Han Tsai (2nd Team Doubles).
- Frankel is coming off a strong season last year, as he compiled a 15-1 overall record and an 11-1 mark in the No. 1 spot. He also combined with Camilo Ponce to post an undefeated 8-0 record in doubles play.
Camilo Ponce rounded out last season ranked second on the team in singles wins (12), while posting an 8-3 mark in the No. 3 position.
Nicholas Campbell finished the 2020-21 campaign with the third most singles victories on the team (10), adding an 8-4 mark in doubles action.
Chung-Han Tsai enters this season after finishing 8-7 in singles play and 10-5 in doubles action in 2020-21.
Nicholas Condos ended the 2020-21 campaign with an 8-9 singles record and an 11-7 mark in doubles play.
- Elon is led by Michael Leonardwho will begin his 18th season at the helm of the program in 2021-22.
 
SCOUTING CAMPBELL
- The Camels hold a 3-1 overall record early this season after defeating N.C. Central, 7-0, in its most recent outing.
- Campbell is led by head coach David Johnson, who is in his 36th year with the program. Johnson has been named the conference Coach of the Year four times during his tenure.
- Tomas Balazi, Damien Nezar and Pol Otin are leading the way for the Camels on the court, as they each currently hold a 3-1 record in singles play this season.
- In doubles play, the combination of Balazi and Leon Petko hold the top mark, as the duo sits at 3-1 so far this season.
 
LAST TIME OUT
- Elon won its first match the season on Thursday, Feb. 17, defeating Longwood, 5-2, in Farmville, Va.
Daniel Martin led the way for the Phoenix, defeating Jourdan Kast in straight sets 6-2, 6-1. It was the team-best second singles win of the season for Martin and moved him to 1-0 in the No. 3 position. Martin also combined with Chung-Han Tsai to defeat Rosen Naydenov and Luis Reis 6-1 in No. 1 doubles play. The duo is now 2-2 on the young season.
Camilo Ponce earned the victory in No. 4 singles, defeating Yoav Weinberg 6-2, 6-2. It was the first win in singles play this season for Ponce and advanced him to 1-2 in the No. 4 spot.
Nicholas Campbell picked up his first singles win of the year on Thursday, taking down Cagigas in straight sets 6-0, 6-4 in No. 2 singles.
Ben Zipay rounded out the singles victories for the Phoenix, as the sophomore outlasted Luis Reis 6-0, 5-7, 13-11 in a three-set battle.
- The combination of Ponce and Kyle Frankel clinched the doubles point for Elon, as the pair took down Ernest Rocabert and Cagigas 7-5 in No. 2 doubles play.
 
THE FACES OF 2021-22
- The Phoenix welcomes back seven returners from last year's squad in seniors Kyle FrankelCamilo Ponce and Chung-Han Tsai, juniors Nicholas Campbell and Nicholas Condos, and sophomores Luke Queiroz and Ben Zipay.
- Elon will feature three newcomers in freshmen Esteban Penagos and Joseph Dougherty, as well as Minnesota transfer Daniel Martin.
- Penagos joins the Phoenix from Laurel Springs High School, where he earned a top-300 ITF ranking.
- Dougherty comes to Elon from North Carolina Cyber Academy where he garnered a top-200 national ranking (18s) and was considered a 4-Star Player on Tennis Recruiting.
- Martin joins Elon from the University of Minnesota where he posted an 8-8 mark in singles play last season.
 
COMING SOON
- The Phoenix returns home for three-straight matches at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center against Campbell (Feb. 19), North Carolina A&T (Feb. 22) and Gardner-Webb (Feb. 26) respectively.
- Elon opens March with back-to-back road contests against Furman (March 5) and Wofford (March 6).
