Women’s Basketball Edges Northeastern on Senior Day, 78-65

ELON, N.C. – Elon women's basketball captured a 78-65 victory over Northeastern on Senior Day on Sunday, Feb. 20.

"A really special day today with eight seniors. Wow," said head coach Charlotte Smith. "This is an incredible group of young women. I love this team. I wouldn't want to go to battle with anybody else and I'm just so grateful for everything that they've poured into this program for the last four-slash five years for Ari [Nance]. We talked about yesterday in practice just keeping the streak alive. That's what we want to do is try to build a lot of momentum going into the conference tournament."

THE RUNDOWN
-Elon started the game on a 11-2 run to take nine-point lead with 5:52 left in the first quarter. A late 9-0 Northeastern run pulled the Huskies within one at the end of the opening period (20-19).
-The start of the second quarter was tight with the teams combining for 13 points and three lead changes in the opening 2:54. Northeastern managed to take a two-point lead (31-29) with 4:45 remaining, but the Phoenix stayed within striking distance the rest of the half. Despite evening the score three times the rest of the quarter, Elon trailed 39-41 at the intermission.
-Back-to-back buckets from Tyja Traore fueled a 6-0 Phoenix run to put the maroon and gold up by four with 7:47 left in the third (45-41). The Phoenix would then go on to outscore Northeastern 16-2 to take its largest lead of the game (17) with just over two minutes left in the quarter (61-44). Elon closed out the quarter with a 61-48 advantage.
-The Huskies made a final attempt gain momentum with a 10-0 run to cut the Phoenix lead to six (66-60) with 6:31 remaining in the game, but Elon answered immediately with a 10-0 run of its own to retake a 16-point advantage (76-60). Following five Northeastern points, a pair of free throws from Kayla Liles secured the win for the Phoenix.
