ELON, N.C. – Elon women's basketball registered its fifth win in a row on Feb. 23 as it posted a 64-43 win over UNCW for its second season sweep against a conference opponent this season.

"Incredibly happy that we got the win tonight," said head coach
Charlotte Smith. "It was ugly. It was an ugly win, but we'll take an ugly win over a pretty loss. We got a big weekend ahead of us, so we're shifting gears now and looking forward to being competitive this upcoming weekend."

THE RUNDOWN
-The Phoenix opened the first quarter with a 5-0 run capped by a
Peyton Carter three. UNCW took the lead with a 6-0 run, but Elon outscored the Seahawks 6-2 in the final 3:23 to hold an 11-8 advantage at the break.
-Elon's offense started to click in the second quarter, outscoring UNCW 14-4 run to extend its lead to 13 (25-12) with 5:22 until halftime. Following a pair of Seahawk field goals, a tough layup from
Brie Perpignan closed the first half and lifted Elon to a 27-16 lead.
-The Phoenix went on a 7-0 run to push its lead to 15 (36-21) midway through the third frame. UNCW answered with five points of its own, but the maroon and gold scored seven unanswered points in the final 2:21, including a buzzer beater from
Ajia James, to put the Phoenix up 43-25 heading into the final period.
-The Elon offense remained hot, outscoring UNCW 14-5 in the first half of the quarter (57-30). The Phoenix held off the Seahawks the rest of the way to claim the 64-43 victory.Â

NOTES
-Perpignan paced the Phoenix in both points (14) and assists (7). The senior guard also added two rebounds and one steal.
-
Evonna McGill finished with 13 points, three rebounds, one assist and one block.
-
Kayla Liles led the team in rebounds (8) in addition to adding four points and three assists.
-Carter set a new career high for three pointers in a game (3) while also matching her personal best in points (9).
-James matched her career high for single-game three pointers (3), totaling nine points, five rebounds and two steals.
-The maroon and gold held the Seahawks to single-digit scoring in three of the four quarters.
-Elon's bench outscored UNCW's bench 33-8.
-The Phoenix outrebounded the Seahawks 30-27. Elon is 12-0 (5-0 CAA) on the season when it outrebounds an opponent.
-With the win, the Phoenix improves to 15-9 (7-7 CAA).

The Phoenix travels to Delaware on Friday, Feb. 25 for an 11 a.m. matchup against the Blue Hens.
