ELON, N.C. – Elon University baseball has its first road game of the season on Tuesday, Feb. 22 as the Phoenix (1-2) travels to Chapel Hill, N.C. for a 4 p.m. meeting with North Carolina.

THE SERIES
- UNC is ahead in the all-time series, 39-9.
- Elon and UNC met on Feb. 23 last season in Chapel Hill, with the hosts taking the game 4-1.

Alex Iadisernia had a perfect day at the plate and led the Phoenix, batting 3-for-3 and scoring the lone run for the maroon and gold.
Kyle Greenler received the loss after allowing three runs with three strikeouts in two innings of relief.
SCOUTING THE TAR HEELS
- North Carolina is sitting at 3-0 after sweeping Seton Hall at home last weekend.
- The Tar Heels opened the series with a 14-3 final on Friday, then blanked the Pirates 19-0 on Saturday to claim the series win. UNC capped off its Opening Weekend with a 7-3 score on Sunday.
- Johnny Castagnozzi is hitting .636 to lead the Tar Heels at the plate. Next is Danny Serretti at .538 and Reece Holbrook at .500. Freshman Vance Honeycutt (.400) homered three times, to include twice on Friday. His first was a solo shot in the fourth inning. He then added a three-run blast in the eighth to cap off UNC's scoring.
- On the mound, sophomore left hander Will Sandy is expected to get the nod. The Raliegh, N.C. native made five starts and 10 appearances in 2021. He finished the season 1-1 with an 11.42 ERA and eight strikeouts through 17.1 innings pitched.
- UNC's arms own a 1.33 ERA as a group and have combined to throw 32 strikeouts through 27.0 innings. Seton Hall hit .225 against them.
ABOUT THE PHOENIX
- The Phoenix dropped its first series of the season, but avoided the sweep with a 7-4 win over Fairfield on Sunday.
- Brian Edgington earned the win after holding the Stags to two runs on four hits and one walk. He struck out five batters in the 6.0-inning start. At the plate, Willie Havens went 3-for-4 with his first home run of the season and a base on balls. Connor Coolahan contributed a 2-for-3 effort and Parker Haskin had the team's other multi-hit performance as he finished 2-for-4 with a double, a run and a walk.
- Elon has three players hitting .400 or better after its first three games. Connor Offshack leads the way with a .429 average while Havens and Samuel Frontino are next at .400. Additionally, Coolahan is close behind at .375 and Charlie Granatell is batting .333.
- As a team, the Phoenix enters Tuesday's game batting .211 with a .400 slugging percentage and a .356 on-base percentage.
- Ian Evans is expected to make the start for Elon on Tuesday. He made one appearance this weekend, tossing 2.0 innings out of the pen on Saturday. He allowed one unearned run on two hits and a walk and added one strikeout.
- Evans also made his collegiate debut and first career start at North Carolina on Feb. 18, 2020. Facing a No. 13-ranked Tar Heels squad, he was tagged for five runs (four earned) on seven hits and two walks. He had one strikeout in 4.0 complete innings.
- Elon pitchers own a combined 4.00 ERA after 27.0 innings pitched this past weekend. The Phoenix arms struck out 29 Fairfield batters with the Stags hitting .248 against them.
- More impressive was the fact that Elon pitchers only gave up four walks to Fairfield, with two of those being intentional. That effort has the maroon and gold tied for second in the country with Southern Mississippi at 1.33 walks allowed per nine innings. Elon is also ranked third nationally in strikeout-to-walk ratio (7.25).
TAKE A WALK
- After struggling to get on base in the first two games against Fairfield, Elon frustrated the Stags pitchers on Sunday, drawing 12 walks on the day.
- Frontino walked three times, stole a base and scored twice in the win.
- The Stags used six pitchers in the game, and all but one of them walked multiple Elon batters.
- Elon's patience at the plate also helped the Phoenix outhit the Stags 10-6 and chased Fairfield starting pitcher Colin McVeigh out of the game after only 3.2 innings thrown.
- The Phoenix walked 18 times in the series.
OFFSHACK COMES OUT SWINGING
- Connor Offshack had the hot bat for the Phoenix on Opening Day. The sophomore out of Collegeville, Pa. batted 3-for-3 with two home runs and one double. He drove in three runs and scored another two.
- In his rookie season in 2021, he went 0-for-12 and scored two runs in two starts and nine games.
UP NEXT
Elon returns to Latham Park this weekend for a three-game home series versus Longwood. The teams open with a 4 p.m. Game One on Friday, then play again at 2 p.m. on Saturday. The series concludes with a 1 p.m. start to Game Three on Sunday.
