McGill Scores Career-High 21 Points as Phoenix Falls at Delaware

NEWARK, Del. – Despite a career-high 21 points from Evonna McGill, Elon University women's basketball fell to Delaware by a four-point margin on Friday, Feb. 25, 65-61.
 
THE RUNDOWN
-Delaware jumped out to an early 7-2 lead to start the game. However, back-to-back three pointers from Ajia James put the maroon and gold up 8-7 with 4:32 on the clock. The Phoenix held on to its lead for the remainder of the period, heading into the second quarter with a 15-12 advantage.
-Following a field goals from Tyja Traore, the Blue Hens went on a 13-2 run to take a 25-19 lead (3:03). Elon responded with a 6-2 run of its own, with all six points coming from McGill. But Delaware's Jasmine Dickey closed the half with a pair of free throws to put the Blue Hens up by four at the intermission (29-25).
-McGill scored the Phoenix's first six points of the second half as Elon cut the Blue Hens' lead to three in the first five minutes of the quarter (34-31). From there, the teams traded baskets for the rest of the period as Delaware held a four-point advantage (44-40) going into the final 10 minutes of play.
-Vanessa Taylor brought the Phoenix within two points of the Blue Hens with a three pointer at the 6:51 mark, but Delaware responded with six unanswered points to bring its lead back up to eight (55-47). The Phoenix went on to outscore the Blue Hens 14-10 in the remaining time, but it was not enough as Delaware walked away with the win.
 
NOTES
-McGill's 21 points paced the maroon and gold offense. The senior shot 9-of-16 from the field in addition to tying Peyton Carter for second on the team in rebounds (5).
-Perpignan recorded 12 points on the day. The guard also led both teams in assists (7).
-Traore matched her personal best in field goals (5) and season high in points (11).
-James recorded a team-best eight rebounds in addition to her eight points.
-Ariana Nance made her first appearance since Jan. 21. The guard totaled four points and two assists.
-Elon's bench outscored Delaware's bench 35-4.
-With the loss, the Phoenix stands at 15-10 (7-8 CAA) on the season.
 
UP NEXT
The maroon and gold will face Drexel in Philadelphia on Sunday, Jan. 27 at 2 p.m.
