ELON, N.C.--Â Elon women's basketball dropped a 67-52 decision to Towson inside Schar Center on Sunday, Feb. 6.
Â
"I'm very pleased with our fight in the game," said head coach
Charlotte Smith. "That's kind of been the signature of our team even though we have not come out on the winning side for the most part. They never surrendered. They never laid down and died. They fought until the very end."
Â
THE RUNDOWN
-The Phoenix had the momentum at the start of the contest, outscoring the Tigers 11-2 with 4:24 left in the quarter. Despite Towson going on a 7-0 run less than two minutes later, the Phoenix went into the second quarter up 17-13.
-Back-to-back buckets from
Brie Perpignan extended the Elon lead to six (21-15) less than two minutes into the second period. The teams traded baskets throughout the period until a 6-0 Towson run stole the Phoenix lead with 38 seconds on the clock (32-31). A jumper from
Tyja Traore in the final moments gave the advantage back to the Phoenix and make the halftime score 33-32.
-Towson managed to tie the game at 35 with 7:06 to go in the third quarter. The teams remained close throughout the quarter, with neither side able to take more than a two-point lead. That would change when a triple from
Peyton Carter capped a 6-0 Phoenix run to help Elon carry a 45-42 lead into the final frame.
-The Tigers took over the momentum and didn't look back in the last 10 minutes of play as Towson cruised to the 15-point victory. Â
