RICHMOND, Va. --Â Elon University women's lacrosse outlasted VCU 13-8 on Saturday, March 19 in Richmond.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-The game started off slow with VCU taking a 3-2 lead at the end of the first quarter.
-The Phoenix offense roared to life in the second, outscoring the Rams 6-1 to help Elon to an 8-4 lead at half.Â
Sammy Fisher and
Cierra Hopson both registered a pair of goals, while
Hannah McCarthy and
Kaitlyn Michaud each chipped in one over the course of the quarter.
-Elon carried the momentum into the second half, opening the scoring with a
Cate Mackel goal assisted by
Gillian Curran. Following a goal by McCarthy, VCU found the back of the net twice. But the Phoenix held a four-goal lead (10-6) heading into the final frame.
-Back-to-back goals from Michaud and
Margaret Stephan pushed Elon's lead to six (12-6) with 9:37 on the clock. Despite the Rams answering with two goals of their own, one final goal from Stephan iced the game and gave the Phoenix a 13-8 victory.

NOTES
-McCarthy led the scoring for the Phoenix with three goals for her third hat trick of the season.
-Curran finished with three assists and one goal for a team-high four points. She also paced the maroon and gold in caused turnovers (2).
-Hopson, Fisher, Stephan and Michaud all tallied two goals.
-
Lyndsey Morhardt and
Emma Flynn tied for the team high in ground balls (3).
-Elon beat VCU in the draw circle (14-11) with Stephan pacing the Phoenix with seven draw controls and Curran following with five.
-The maroon and gold also outshot the Rams 36-22.
-
Paige Brown played the entire game in goal, recording seven saves.
-With the win, Elon improves to 3-5 on the season.
