Elon enters the spring with a loaded group of defensive backs. Starters return all over the field, including senior
Cole Coleman, junior
Tre'Von Jones, sophomore
Dylan Tucker and redshirt sophomore
Omar Rogers.Â
Â
"On the backend, we return seven players who started games for us in 2021," Defensive Coordinator/Defensive Backs Coach
Dovonte Edwards said. "We have an opportunistic bunch who embrace both competition and hard work. I look forward to this group taking the next step in their development as they work this spring to fine-tune their position-specific techniques, fundamentals and communication inside of the scheme."
Â
Rogers earned Elon's top grade among defensive backs by Pro Football Focus and was the seventh-ranked safety in FCS in NFL passer rating against. Coleman was first team All-CAA and led Elon with 71 tackles. The chaotic defense that thrives on forcing turnovers is spearheaded by those two in the back end.Â
Â
Jones aligns with the defensive mindset and was third team All-CAA in the fall. He had two interceptions and ranked 14
th nationally in fumbles recovered.Â
Â
Along with those three, Tucker started eight times at Elon's spur position and had two forced fumbles and a defensive score against Rhode Island on a 43-yard fumble return. Â
Â
Junior
Bo Sanders started four games at safety and redshirt sophomore
Antonio White earned three starts at cornerback. Sophomore
Jaidyn Denis started a game at cornerback and was highly rated by PFF. Those three add experience and depth to the loaded secondary.Â
Â
Redshirt junior
Jamarian Hawkins and sophomore
Darius Harris both filled key roles for the defense in 2021 and continue to provide depth. Redshirt freshmen
Caleb Curtain,
Chase Speicher and
Jonathan Robinson have all flashed in limited action early in their careers. Redshirt freshman Lucas McKeown joins the roster for spring football.
Â
Elon also announced the addition of three freshmen during signing days and will bring in
Senquavious Alsobrooks,
Ishmel Atkins and
Anthony Martin for even more depth in the unit.Â
Â
"I'm excited to see these young men continue to grow as a unit," Cornerbacks Coach
Arketa Banks said. "We will look to continue the development of communication both verbally and non-verbally this spring."
