ELON, N.C. –- Elon University women's lacrosse earned its first win of the 2022 season on March 2 as it delivered a 22-20 victory over Campbell at Rudd Field.

Josh Hexter. "It was a hard-fought game and I loved how we were able to remain poised and disciplined throughout most of the match. I have a strong belief in the heart and the grit of this team and I can see the confidence building in them every game."
HOW IT HAPPENED
-The Camels got going early as it outscored the Phoenix 4-0 in the first four minutes of play. Elon responded, however, with seven unanswered goals to take a three-goal lead at the end of opening quarter.
-The teams traded goals through the first six minutes of the second period, with the maroon and gold holding an 11-7 advantage (9:44). 90 seconds later, a pair of goals from Cambell's Mackenzie Kolesar ignited a 5-0 run to give the lead back to the Camels (12-11). Goals from
Cierra Hopson and
Kailey McKenna put Elon back up by one, but another goal from Kolesar in the final seconds tied the game at 13 going into intermission.
-Neither team scored more than five goals in the third quarter. With the score tied at 15, the maroon and gold scored three of the next four goals, including a goal from Margaret Stephen at the buzzer, to give the Phoenix two-goal advantage going into the final 15 minutes of play.
-After back-to-back goals by the Camels, Elon managed to up its score to 21 (4:30). Campbell's Sam Bischoff found the back of the net with 4:15 on the clock to cut the Phoenix lead to one, but
Bella Feldmann scored the final goal of the night two minutes later to ice the game.
NOTES

Hannah McCarthy paced the Phoenix with a career-high five goals on six shots.

Gillian Curran's career-high 12 draw controls tied for second most in a single game by a Colonial Athletic Association player. She also led the team in ground balls (4) while adding one goal and one assist.
-Hopson also met her career mark with four goals on the night.
-Feldmann added four points with three goals and one assist.

Sammy Fisher recorded the first hat trick of her career with three goals on four shots. Her goals were also the first of her career.

Cate Mackel tallied two goals, one assist and two ground balls.

Emma Flynn and Curran paced the Phoenix in caused turnovers with two apiece while Margaret Stephen followed with one.
-In goal,
Chloe Herghelegiu totaled eight saves on the night to increase her total to 30 on the season.
-The Phoenix outperformed the Camels from the draw circle 24-22.
-Elon's 22 goals mark the highest single-game total since the 2019 season when the Phoenix defeated Winthrop 23-4.
-With the win, Elon improves to 1-4 on the season.
