GREENVILLE, S.C. –- Elon University women's lacrosse won its second game in a row on March 5 as it recorded a 21-9 victory over Furman.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-
Sammy Fisher opened the game with a pair of goals to give the Phoenix an early 2-0 lead. However, the Paladins went on to score three of the next four goals to tie the game at three (1:17).
Gillian Curran scored the final goal of the quarter with 34 seconds on the clock to put Elon ahead 4-3.
-Following the teams trading a pair of goals,
Margaret Stephan ignited a 4-1 run with 4:34 on the clock that gave Elon four-goal advantage at the half (10-6). Two of the four goals came from
Cierra Hopson.
-Only three goals were scored in the third quarter. After a goal by Furman's Anna Roser, both
Hannah McCarthy and
Bella Feldmann found the back of the net to increase the Phoenix's lead to seven (14-7).
-The fourth quarter belonged to the Phoenix. Elon held the Paladins to just two goals in addition to adding nine goals to its score to cruise to the 12-goal win.

NOTES
-Fisher and McCarthy led the Phoenix scoring with four goals apiece, while Stephan and Hopson followed with hat tricks. McCarthy also tallied a team-best five points.
-Curran posted a career-high six ground balls to tie for the game high. She also paced both teams in draw controls (6) in addition to tying
Kaitlyn Michaud and Furman's Meagan Beal for the game high in caused turnovers (3).
-Michaud's caused turnovers marked a new personal best.
-Three Elon players scored their first goals of the season during the contest: Michaud,
Mikaela Buoscio and
Bridget Kelly. Kelly's goal was also the first of her collegiate career. Â
-In goal,
Chloe Herghelegiu (2-3) totaled eight saves on 28 shots faced. The freshman has now recorded eight saves in back-to-back games. Â
-The Phoenix outshot the Paladins 42-28 while also finishing the game with a 34-17 advantage in shots on goal.
-Elon had 20 of the 34 draw controls over the course of the matchup.
-The maroon and gold has registered 20 or more goals in back-to-back games for the first time in program history. The maroon and gold totaled 22 goals in its last game against Campbell on March 2.
-With the win, Elon improves to 2-4 on the season.
